Hitachi Magic Wand

We’ve reviewed the Hitachi Magic Wand before, but because it is such a popular toy, I figured going for a second time around wouldn’t hurt.

Ever since I can remember knowing about sex toys, I’ve known about the Hitachi. It was always touted as the most powerful of all vibrators and, subsequently, the loudest. As I’m a fan of super strong vibrations, I was convinced that once I touched it’s rounded head to my bits that all my dreams would come true.
Unfortunately I didn’t fall in love with the Hitachi like I assumed I would. I’ve had other powerful massagers before and I always felt they just needed a touch more strength, so I figured the mother of all jackhammer vibes, the Hitachi, would do the trick.

But lo and behold, the Hitachi was too strong for this seasoned sex toy reviewer. And while I know I can cushion the intense vibrations with a blanket between me and the Hitachi, I still can’t help but feel a little disappointed by the compromise.

There are plenty of things to love about this Magic Wand, especially if you like your vibrations really, really strong. The Hitachi is super easy to use and requires no lengthy instruction booklet. Just plug it in and flip the switch. With only two speeds – warp (lo) and break-neck (high), it’s pretty hard to get confused. I love that I didn’t have to worry about finding batteries to make the toy work and it makes me feel better to know that I’m cutting down on the amount of batteries in the landfills.

While I wanted to love the Hitachi so much, there were a few issues that I had to face that brought me back to reality. Aside from the overly strong vibrations (for me), I just wasn’t feeling the electric cord. I found myself getting frustrated by having to be close to the outlet and a little scared to run anything else off the same socket while I had the Hitachi on. I was convinced it would blow the fuse! It’s seriously that strong. I also didn’t really like how loud the Hitachi buzzes. I knew it would be loud going into it, but sheesh, I think the neighbors could hear when I had it on! And though I don’t care that people know I get off, I don’t really need them to know when I am in the middle of the act. Lastly with the negatives, the Hitachi is seriously less ‘wand’ and more ‘tree trunk’ when it comes to thickness, bulk and sheer weight. Only sometimes was the weight and bulk in the way, but usually I was about to ignore it and focus on the buzzing head.

All that said, I do really like the Hitachi Magic Wand… just not as much as I thought I would. While that might be more of a hype issue than actually about the toy itself, it still doesn’t change the fact that the cons may have me reaching past the Hitachi as I go into the toy box.
