Anna Span is the UK’s best director. Officially. At least she has been for the last two years, as chosen by the UK Adult Film & Television Awards (UKAFTA), as well as winning the Best British Film Brand at the ETO Awards this year. Sure awards and accolades are dandy, but when it really comes down to it, Ann Span makes awesome films that are truly unique. Not only does she feature beautiful women, she makes sure the guys are nothing to kick out of bed too. Span creates thoughtfully hot movies with humor, fun and a big dose of reality. Sort of like soap operas with sex, but better!

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I started by setting up my company Easy on the Eye Productions in 1998 After graduating from St Martin’s School of Art in London with a BA (hons) Fine Art Film and Video degree. At college I wrote my dissertation called ‘Towards a New Pornography’ which looked at what women would like to see in porn as well as what makes a film sexy.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
Making documentary films, or running another female-aimed business.

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
That you can make your voice heard. It’s great that it is possible to set up a production company and put you own films out there. In mainstream TV that is impossible because co-one will buy your films if you are not a known name.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
The job is always tickling funny, every day but there are not so many huge laughs out loud to speak of. People expect porn to be one calamity after another but in reality if you ran a shoot like that you would go out of business. Having said that the crew and cast always have a laugh on set, it’s important to be able to relax like that.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in industry?
That the female models are only doing the job because they are desperate for money or have been abused.

6. What did you do today?
Lots of emails before overseeing an edit.

7. What would you rather have done today?
Work on my new toy site www.annaspansextoys.com which we are launching in a month. I am like a kid in a sweetshop with this new experience. I love it!

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
Belladonna, Chloe Nicole or my all time favourite, Jeanna Fine

Jeanna Fine

10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
Eat cake – and I don’t mean the flesh type – just cake! (the flesh type is hopefully free anyway…)

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
I’d stop religion being given a special power over any other type of life choice or political belief, which is ultimately what it is. I’d also make learning philosophy mandatory up to the age of 16 to offer humanitarianism as a real alternative to believing in religion.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
There is something but I’m not telling!

13. Which is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
I’m really enjoying the www.annaspansextoys.com project, it’s like a new lease of life.

14. If you could have one superpower what would it be?
The ability to ‘be’ other people for a day, to experience other points of view.

15. Meat or veggie?
Meat but I love veggies a lot too.

16. What is your favorite book?
 I love too many of them, I guess I really like ‘The Beauty Myth’ by Naomi Wolf, it changed my life a bit… I’m a sucker for non-fiction I am afraid.

17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Cyclists who think they own the road!

18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
Try to stop thinking in terms of how you appear to men and try to explore what turns you on, truly. Hard to do in our world…

19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Apart from my own (of course!) I like lots of films but Café Flesh is still a classic.

20. Tell me one thing you’ve never told anyone else.
I’d like to run for parliament.
