20 Questions With April Flores

April Flores

Voluptuous Life

We currently live in an age where access to images of beautiful women is merely one click away at any given time. Our magazine stands have had to make room for the onslaught of new, sexy publications and our base of photographers has opened its borders to include a new army of camera-wielding aspirants who want to capture provocative imagery of their friend, wife, or girl-next-door. Girls who never thought they could include modeling in their repertoire of experience, because of their non-mainstream attributes are now finding homes for their various arrays of height and weight, bold hair colors and body modifications. And while all of that, in essence, is what art is about? expansion and transcendence of societal norms mingling with divine aesthetic presentation and superior artistic skill, this recent complete saturation of the market makes finding something truly outstanding a rarity? Like finding that proverbial needle within the haystack. Discovering a treasure that rises above being easily categorized, that breaks apart from the world it was created in, and itself becomes a muse and an aspirant, creating its own universe. April Flores is that rare, exploding glorious and exciting gem.

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?

>I entered this industry very gradually over several years. I started off doing erotic modeling for Carlos Batts (who is now my husband) seven years ago. He was working on his book Wild Skin and I eventually had the honor of being on the cover of that, his first book. Carlos and I had a wonderful creative chemistry and I became his muse. We shot constantly, while always trying to push new artistic boundaries. Eventually Carlos started shooting me with a moving camera and we started to focus on the moving image as opposed to the still image.

During that time, Carlos shot Belladonna for a Japanese magazine called Warp. He suggested that she and I take pictures together for our on-going book project. I got the chance to meet her and I was instantly drawn to her genuine, sweet demeanor. She asked if I would be interested in shooting a sex scene for one of her movies. I am always up for a new experience, so I said yes. That, and I thought she was really sexy! We shot and our scene was in her movie Evil Pink 2.

I really enjoyed the whole experience, and what made it even better was the responses and support I received from other women.

Carlos finished our first film, Alter Ego in 2006 and we went on to start filming our second film Voluptuous Life. I met Kimberly Kane while we were compiling footage for VL and the scene in that movie was our first time shooting together. We have a great chemistry and we have also become good friends. Last summer she asked me if I would do a scene with her in a film she directed called Morphine. Our scene was really fun and included me sitting on her face!

I have been really lucky to always be able to work with friends and be directed by my husband. We will start filming our next movie called Kiss Attack in a few weeks.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?

Trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life was always hard for me. One of the biggest reasons I didn’t finish college is that I couldn’t decide on a one major. I guess I would be a make-up artist, or a real estate agent.<!–

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from the industry?

I met Nina Hartley at the AEE Convention recently and she gave me so much good advice! She is filled with so much wisdom and I was delighted that she was talking to me sharing her knowledge with me. The best thing she told me was to make sure I am always having a good time.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?

Hmmm… I don’t have a “blooper” moment yet, but I’m sure that won’t last too long!

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?

I would love to be in a movie directed by Martin Scorsese.

9. Who is your favorite adult performer?

I can’t say I have a favorite, but after working on these films, I will say that Daisy Layne and Naomi Cruise are stand out stars. They’re professional, funny and totally awesome to work with. But then again so were Lyla Lei and Lexi Bardot. I think my favorite performers are always someone I’ve worked with. However, if I had to pick someone I didn’t work with, I’d say Jean Val Jean because he’s very easy on the eyes.

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?

That’s a loaded question… if I were president I would make sure that organizations like that focus on Women’s health (like Planned Parenthood) and helping the homeless had plenty of funding because what they do is vital to many individuals.
I would also ensure that women would always have the freedom of choice, and that any decision they make would be between them and their doctors. Also, I would make sure more people had access to health care.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?

When I was younger and starting to wear shoes with higher heels, I would fall all the time. Once I fell in front of a guy I was trying to hook up with. Also, I want women to not be afraid to explore their sexuality because of their weight. I want to show bigger girls that they can be sexy and express themselves sexually regardless of their size. More to love, right?
