Talking About The Taboo Conference – This Weekend at CSPH

If there is one thing about me that sums up all of my work in sexuality, porn and sex education it’s that I am a sexy nerd – an academic pervert who loves to learn all that she can about anything related to gettin’ busy.  So, I can’t help but be excited by the  Talking About the Taboo: Discussing Difficult Issues in Human Sexuality conference this weekend at the Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health!

Not only am I super excited to learn new things this weekend, I get to a chance to reconnect with some of my favorite sexy smarties, Sinclair Sexsmith, Audacia Ray, and Megan Andelloux (the founder and director of the Center), as well as some of folks from the New York Sex Bloggers Calendar party.  This conference is going to be seriously awesome.

Check out more info on The Center For Sexual Pleasure and Health’s site.

See you there!

Sasha Grey Takes On Political Sex Scandal Commentary

Sasha Grey Speaks Out About S.C. Gov. Sanford for Newsweek

Sasha Grey is quite the Renaissance woman these days!  Aside from being an award-winning porn performer and crossover mainstream star who crossed right into a Steven Soderbergh flick, this 21-year-old lady is also a Newsweek contributor.  Yep, you read that right.  Seriously smart beyond her years, Grey was tapped to provide commentary on  Newsweek’s “20/10: The Decade in Rewind,” a project they are collaborating on with  Facebook.com.  Fitting to her life in the sex world, Grey analyzes the political sex  scandal involving South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.

Instead of making a 21st-century apology, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford decided to take it “old school,” comparing his extramarital affairs to that of King David. Why not just say you find Pinocchio’s story interesting? Or, let’s see—Bill Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, John Ensign would have also worked! That would have been a surprising admission in an age where extramarital affairs no longer seem to grab our attention. Americans act so shocked when they hear about politicians, celebrities, and athletes having affairs, but I have to believe that many women who are married to men with power are aware of affairs, and accept it. Don’t ask, don’t tell; as long as they receive something in exchange from their husband—whether that exchange be children, money, material items, or sex. We create our own morals. It’s once the affair goes public that morals change. The wife feels shame and humiliation because of public awareness, yet felt no desire to speak out prior. She allowed this affair to go on, or allowed herself to stay in the relationship. She probably was more ashamed that her husband was such a moron, and thought he could get away with flying to Argentina on a commercial flight and claim he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. We live in one of the most liberated countries in the world, yet we are still conflicted with Bible Belt-infused guilt. Consensual sexual preferences shouldn’t govern our politics, media, or way of life. Ideally, we should all openly have something extra on the side. (Newsweek)

Man, oh man, smart girls are hot!

Check out the rest of “20/10: The Decade in Rewind” as well!

From PowerPoint To Porno: Nerdy Pervs Unite!

My PowerPoint Titlepage!

Back on Friday (which always seems like a million years ago on Tuesday), I headed over to Widener University for the Careers in Sexuality Conference that I told you guys about last week.  I meant to write about it yesterday when I got back to the office, but taking a day off means that there are a million things to do when you get back, so unfortunately it had to wait.  But have no fear, you get to hear all about it now!

Like I said in the last post, the Conference asked me to come talk about having an alternative career in the sexuality field, so I created a whole workshop presentation titled, “From PowerPoint to Porno: Taking on an Alternative Career in Sexuality, Post Graduate Studies.”

Pretty fancy name, huh?  I was freaking out because I was in the same time slot as the past director of education at Planned Parenthood and the authority on trans youth in the country – just the three of us.  Yikes!  But all my friends from the university that were there offered up plenty of advice and good tidings (though nobody told me to imagine folks in their underpants – I guess when you work in sex that doesn’t really do much, huh?).

We

Tomorrow is Widener University’s Careers In Sexuality Conference and guess who they asked to do a workshop on alternative careers in the sexuality field?  ME, that’s who!

So, tomorrow morning I will be presenting my workshop “From PowerPoint to Porno: Taking on an Alternative Career in Sexuality, Post Graduate Studies” to the bunch of folks that are interested because I used “porn” in the title.  I kid, I kid.

I’m actually really excited to be presenting, not only because I get to talk about my job and how awesome it is, or because I get to preach the gospel of the porno, but because there isn’t a ton of talk about careers outside of education and clinical work in the Widener Human Sexuality Education Program.  It makes sense because it is an education and clinical program, but still, I’m happy to see a little smut thrown into the mix.  Especially if that smut tosser is me!

My favorite part of the conference process so far (it’s the first conference I’m presenting at!) was definitely writing my bio.  Take a look:

J.D. is a Philadelphia-based new media sex educator and sexuality writer. Coming into the field with a desire to educate outside the classroom, J.D. earned her Masters of Education in Human Sexuality from Widener University and now works online, creating a sex-positive community with HotMoviesForHer.com, a video-on-demand adult movie site specifically for women. With a focus on pleasure education and queer sexuality, J.D. spends her days making sure that every person is experiencing the most sexual pleasure they can, as well as baking, sewing, crafting and pretty much doing anything else that involves her hands.

I love it!  So, if you happen to be the conference tomorrow and see me, please stop by and say hello!

20 Questions With Candida Royalle, Part. 4

Long before there was a marketplace of women making dirty movies for women, there was Candida Royalle. Just about 25 years ago, Royalle moved from in front of the camera to behind the lens and began creating porn she was interested in watching with her studio, Candida Royalle’s Femme. Considered a rock star by lady porn lovers (including us HM4Her gals), Candida was one of the first to start releasing movies made from a woman’s voice and created with women viewers in mind. Without her vision and perseverance, ‘for women, by women’ porn might never have taken off like it has, and we might not even exist. So thanks, Candida!

And because Candida was a pioneer of the field and fought on the forefront of female porn, the woman has a lot of wonderful memories and stories! So to let us take a glimpse of the past and experience all Candida has to say, we’ve broken her interview into four parts, complete with some of her personal pictures from other the years!

Look for the four parts of Candida’s interview, posting on Monday’s and be sure to check out part onepart two and part three!

Along with being the queen of women’s porn, Royalle wears quite a number of different tiaras, including being the first erotic filmmaker to have been invited to become a member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), as well as a celebrated sex toy designer with her Natural Contours line of discreet, high-style toys.

Happy Humpday!  Welcome back to the midweek stretch, when we scour the internet for all the sexy news that is fit to link.  It’s June already – can you believe it!?  Doesn’t it seem like the months just fly by, but the week goes as slow as possible?  Anyway, we’ve found lots to share, so let’s get to it!

– Porn star Jiz Lee shows us queers a great way to make sure our ecomonic voices are being heard… or at the least seen.

– A recent study shows that history students have the most active sex lives.  And here I was, thinking that getting a degree in sex would get me extra booty. (via Em and Lo)

–  Twenty years after the first and only sexual reassignment surgery in the country caused a huge scandal, Cuba has finally lifted their sex change ban!  (via SUNFiltered)

– Can stem cell therapy help fight HIV?  New research is showing that it just might be possible. (via SunFiltered)

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Orgasm

The TED Conference always brings out the coolest stuff.  Writer Mary Roach, author of books Stiff and Bonk, recently took the TED stage to let us all in on a few of the lesser known tibits about the orgasm.

We love smart chicks, of course, but there is something extra exhilerating about watching Roach make the hand motions while describing a sybian-style vagina cam.  Hot!
