Happy National Coming Out Day! Each year October 11th we celebrate the courageous act of coming out of the closet and bring additional awareness to LGBTQ issues. There are tons of awesome discussions going around online, and I thought I would add my two cents to this amazing outpouring of support and positivity.
Coming out of the closet is a tricky concept. In most folks’ minds, LGBTQ people come out of the closet at some point in their lives, and bam, that’s it – they are out. But it’s a little more complicated than that. Coming out can be a daily interaction; a repeated process that happens every time some of us walk out our front doors into the world.
Sure, coming out to our families and loved ones might be a one-time event, but depending on our outward identity, sometimes they way we look does it for us – and sometimes the way we look does the opposite.
I am a femme queer. That means that I am a queer lady that really enjoys performing femininity and all the glitter and glitz that comes with it. While I might not be outed every day by looking more gender non-normative (not that looking anyway makes you LGBTQ), being femme has it’s own constrictions. Because I may “read” heterosexual to some folks, I need to out myself on a regular bases to make sure that my queer identity is seen. Hello. My name is J.D. Bauchery, and I am a queer fat femme. I don’t write about my own sexual exploits on the site too much, but today I thought I’d disclose a little bit and let you into my interworkings.
Last week I had the pleasure of taking in The Femme Show, a lovely spoken word/performance troupe that focuses on all facets of femme queer identity and everything gender-ific in general. Basically, it was pure awesomeness slung right up my alley. While the whole show was really lovely (I saw it twice!) and I enjoyed all of the pieces, there was one monologue in particular that struck a major cord with me and drilled right to the core.
It was Canadian artist Mylène St Pierre’s performance about being a fat femme AND a sexual being. Not just a sexual being – a kinky, sexy, aggressive, ACTIVE participant in her sex life. She explains that being fat does not mean she is desperate or willing to fucking anyone that gives her the littlest bit of attention. She is in control of her sexual destiny and refuses to bend (over) to anyone’s notions of how she should behave. And it was one of the first times that it really struck me – this is such a shared experience for fat women.
(Note: The word fat is not offensive to me. I know it is for some people, but I’m all about appropriating words that have been used as insults against me in the past. So yeah, I also identify as a perv.)
Sure, I’ve talked about sex with some of my fat femme friends before (my life revolves around sex, after all), but I don’t think we’ve ever touched on the specific experience of the fat sex expectation before, and how we think about ourselves within a sexy situation. Happy New Year’s Eve! Can you believe we are back at December 31st again? Crazy, right? It seems like 2009 flew by here at HM4Her, what with all the awesome changes and exciting additions we’ve had since January. As sad as we were to see Masturbation Month come to an end, National LGBT Pride Month is here and we are super excited! Back in 2000, Bill Clinton declared June as Pride Month to remember the Stonewall Riots, which are considered the start of the gay rights movement. And yesterday, the first of June, President Obama officially proclaimed June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month and called upon the people of the United States to “turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.” Woohoo!
How often do you get to go to a porno opening? Not very often, I would venture to say. Even when you’re involved in the industy like we are, porno doesn’t usually make it to the big screen like it did back in the day. I will say that the weird text at the bottom of the screen and commercials during scene transitions were super distracting and frustrated me enough to fast forward.
