6.9 Questions with Madison Young

Madison Young interviewed by Kelly Shibari.

While at the Feminine Porn Awards for HotMoviesforHer.com, Kelly Shibari interviewed a few of our favorite stars and asked them 6.9 questions.  Below is the final in the series, 6.9 questions with Madison Young.

Well, that’s the last of the 6.9 questions series from Kelly Shibari at the 2013 FPA’s.  We hope you learned a lot of the stars and how they got their start in the porn industry.

Abercrombie & Fitch Gets The Porn Parody Treatment

I’m going to start this post by assuming that all of you are well aware of the disgusting comments made by Abercrombie CEO concerning who should be wearing his clothing. If not, then shame on you, but here ya go. If you have heard of the spewage comments but haven’t seen Greg Karber trying to re-brand the brand then watch this:

And so, now we’re all on the same page. Eh, I guess I’ll throw in Kirstie Alley’s bleep-tastic reaction. With such press circling around such a gigantic asshole, we could only hope that there would be a glimmer of light shining through the poop stain of a situation.

Introducing, “Abercrombie & Bitch XXX”, a porn parody that centers around the “misfortune” of Mike Douchies (…Douchies.). Produced by Assence Films, we’ll be able to watch as Douchies disses any employee who doesn’t fit his idea of perfect body type, and then his wife leaves his ass for a BBW. With Kelly Shibari blowing up the scene with her sextastic hotness and other BBW vids owning on the internet, this was a perfect marriage for current events and porn.

The only sad face in this entire opportunity for porn parody perfection is that we have to wait allllll the way until October, when clearly I’m ready for screening rightthissecond.

2013 Feminist Porn Awards Winners and Review by Kelly Shibari

Attending the 2013 Feminist Porn Awards (Finally!)

I’d never been to Toronto for Good For Her’s Feminist Porn Awards. I’ve been nominated several times, and even won an award for Honoured Website in 2011 for http://PaddedKINK.com – which I had the lovely April Flores accept on my behalf. This year, I was lucky enough to get to go as a HotMoviesForHer representative, which came with a really nice (though slightly anxiety-causing) set of perks!

2013 Feminist Porn Awards

The Capitol Event Theatre is an absolutely beautiful location, complete with great architecture throughout reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century theatre. The balcony upstairs was reserved for VIP guests of the Awards, and I think they definitely had a premium view of all of the festivities – from the semi-formally dressed nominees to the antics of the frisky, sexy, show attendees, it was a beautiful, dreamlike space full of revelers of all kinds.

This was the eighth year that the Awards had taken place, and in line with current trends, they named this year’s Awards show “50 Shades of Porn,” which also described the eclectic crowd and the varied topics covered in the nominated films.

The crowd at the 2013 Feminist Porn Awards

Hosts Lex Vaughn (of Queer as Folk and Short Bus fame) and Ryan G Hinds (of Hedwig fame, amongst many other credits) were brilliant and hilarious in their turns both on and off the stage – with Vaughn mostly on stage and Ryan hopping on and off stage to do random interviews with nominees and show-goers alike to the delight of the audience. Live performances gave the viewers a reprive from the Awards show, the highlight of which was a beautiful yet raunchy burlesque number to the tune of Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison” by the lovely Coco La Crème (who is also Artistic Director for the Awards).

It was a delight to see films that I had seen the night before at the Public. Provocative. Porn screening, including Because I Want You to Watch and Biodildo. The biggest cheers from the crowd came, though, when Krutch won for Sexiest Short – and most deservedly so. It wasn’t just the sexiest “crip porn” I had ever seen, but probably one of the sexiest short films I’d seen this year, I was definitely one of the loudest of those who cheered for Mia Gimp and Clark Matthews (an interview with them is forthcoming!).

As a rep for HotMoviesForHer, my main obligation was to present the Movie of the Year. As much as I like performing, doing interviews and running seminars and workshops, I always seem to get super nervous when it comes to speaking on a stage to a large group of people. Luckily, my presentation speech was written up for me, and though my hands were shaking, I was able to present the award at the very end of the evening.

The party went well into the night after the Awards was over – staff and volunteers cleared the lower seating area to make room for dancing…but many of us had to be up early the next morning for the Feminist Porn Conference at the University of Toronto, and had to duck out right after the Awards.

Kelly Shibari’s review of The First Annual Feminist Porn Conference

Attending the 2013 Inaugural Feminist Porn Conference,

I was lucky enough to not only attend the Feminist Porn Awards, but also the very first-ever Feminist Porn Conference, based on The Feminist Porn Book: The Politics of Producing Pleasure, co-edited by Tristan Taormino and Professors Constance Penley and Mireille Miller-Young (both from University of California-Santa Barbara). It was a very full day of several seminar and panel tracks – completely jam-packed full of everything from a Dyke Porn Retrospective to retail sales.

I was able to use the time, and the collection of amazing minds, at the Conference to get a great deal of interviews for my “6.9 Interviews With…” video series for HotMoviesForHer and FetishMovies, but was also able to sit in on the Dyke Porn Retrospective, and interview trailblazers Nan Kinney and Shar Rednour through film historian Kevin Heffernan of Southern Methodist University (seriously, SMU sent Kevin to the Feminist Porn Conference! How forward-thinking is that???). That interview will be featured in an upcoming blog post!

To put the entire event into a neat nutshell, here’s the press release Tristan sent out post-Conference:

The 1st Annual Feminist Porn Conference Draws Hundreds to University of Toronto

TORONTO (April 8, 2013)—The First Annual Feminist Porn Conference was held at the University of Toronto on April 6, 2013 and drew nearly 250 attendees. This one-day conference brought together academics, cultural critics, performers, directors, producers, sex workers, activists, students, and fans to explore the emergence of feminist porn as a genre, industry, field of study, and movement. The event, the first ever conference devoted exclusively to feminist pornography, featured 45 different presenters from around the world.

Presenters included leading professors whose work spans multiple disciplines from history, sociology, film and media studies to comparative literature, sexuality studies, and feminist studies, including Kevin Heffernan from Southern Methodist University, Lynn Comella of University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Ariane Cruz of Pennsylvania State University, Jill Bakehorn of UC Davis and UC Berkeley, Nicholas Matte of University Toronto, Emily Nagoski from Smith College, and York University’s Bobby Noble as well as scholars from CUNY, UCLA, Northwestern, and Ohio University.

Several panels featured some of the most well-known producers and performers working in feminist porn today, including Jiz Lee, Courtney Trouble, Madison Young, Sinnamon Love, Dylan Ryan, April Flores, Carlos Batts, Loree Erickson, James Darling, Carrie Gray, Tobi Hill-Meyer, Tina Horn, Arabelle Raphael, Quinn Cassidy, Jes Sachse, and Bianca Stone. The international conference drew presenters from around the world, including Liesbet Zikkenheimer and Marije Janssen from Dusk TV, an erotic TV channel for women in the Netherlands and Australian webmistress and director Ms. Naughty of ForTheGirls.com. Carol Queen, PhD, co-founder of the Center for Sex and Culture and Good Vibrations’ sexologist, spoke on two panels: “Conspicuous Consumption: If We Sell It, They Will Come,” about the connection between feminist porn and sex-positive retail stores and “Feminist Perspectives on Sexual Identity and Sexual Health in Educational and Feminist Porn.”

Presenters at the 2013 first annual Feminist Porn Conference

Award-winning filmmaker Shine Louise Houston of Pink and White Productions screened her documentary Shiny Jewels to a huge crowd. A screening of Lesbo Retro: A Dyke Porn Retrospective, a clip show of lesbian porn from 1960-2000, was followed by a question and answer session with its curator, Shar Rednour and special guest Nan Kinney, co-founder of On Our Backs and Fatale Media and recipient of the 2013 Trailblazer Award at The 8th Annual The Feminist Porn Awards on April 5.

The keynote was delivered by feminist pornographer Tristan Taormino and Professors Constance Penley and Mireille Miller-Young (both from University of California-Santa Barbara). As three of the four co-editors of The Feminist Porn Book: The Politics of Producing Pleasure, recently published by The Feminist Press at CUNY, they discussed how feminist porn has shifted sexual representation and pondered what the future holds for feminist porn. “The goal of our book was to put academics and sex industry workers into conversation with one another to discuss critical issues about feminism, sexual media, representation, sexual agency, and labor. This conference took those conversations to the next level,” said Mireille Miller-Young. “We hope it mobilizes academics and sex industry workers to create coalitions to support each other’s work,” said Constance Penley.

“The event exceeded my expectations,” said Tristan Taormino, who produced the conference. “I was inspired by the diversity of voices from professors and students to performers and fans. The enthusiasm for dialogue about feminist porn issues was overwhelming, and I am already planning next year’s conference.”

The Feminist Porn Conference was sponsored by the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, Good for Her, The Feminist Porn Awards, and The Feminist Press.

I think there were two major things lacking in this year’s Conference: firstly, that there was no true business track – as in, no real seminars or panel discussions about the behind-the-camera and webmastering, marketing, and profitability of feminist porn (other than the retail panel). While a few of the other panels discussed the need for successful feminist pornographers to share their wisdom so that feminist pornography could rival mainstream porn, it’s not something that I actually saw happening. Perhaps the movement is still too early in its development, that everyone still wants to hold onto “trade secrets”. I hope in the next incarnation, a business track can be added.

Secondly, there was simply not enough time! I wish I had been able to attend all of the panels, and that’s the number one problem with one-day or weekend conferences…there’s simply not enough time to do a single track, and you end up having to pick and choose when there are multiple tracks. It’s a common problem I have seen at other conferences, and I wish that there were some recordings available for the seminars and panels that I had missed.

All in all, I had an amazing time at the conference, and had the opportunity to get to chat with some really brilliant people. I hope you have the chance to check out the “6.9 Questions With…” series on both HotMoviesForHer and the HM4H YouTube channel, and please comment! Every person had a different set of answers, and have some great stories about porn, feminism, and personal anecdotes!
