Ellen and Portia tied the knot over the weekend. I bet my mom is thrilled.

To be honest, I like how they did it. Degeneres has been open from the beginning about her engagement on her talk show, but when it came down to it, they did something private. I’m sure they both could have gone the huge public affair with corporate sponsors, but a wedding shouldn’t be about all of that garbage.
I hope it was everything they wished for. and that my mom doesn’t think I should get gay married now.

Yesterday, the Massachusetts Senate voted to pass a bill that will repeal a 95 year old state law that has until now prevented gay and lesbian couples who live in other states from marrying in Massachusetts.
Wooohoooo!!!
I may not be able to buy bottle rockets there, but it looks like I’ll be able to drive an hour and a half and make an honest woman of myself.
The bill still needs to pass in the house and be signed by the governor, but neither seems like a major obstacle.
Here’s a little bit from the original post about the antiquated law:
The law originated when lawmakers in many states were trying to prevent interracial couples from crossing state lines to marry. It fell into obscurity for decades. But it received new attention in 2004, when Republican Governor Mitt Romney invoked it after gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts to prevent out-of-state gay and lesbian couples from marrying here and forcing their home states to consider recognizing Massachusetts marriage law.

Ok, I’ll just say this one last thing, then I promise to shut up about the California gay marriage legalization. For a little while, at least.
Lifehacker’s editor Gia Trapani just got hitched to her longtime partner Terra. The Gawker Media (also parent of my obession Jezebel, where I read this, of course) writer just about perfectly sums up my reasons for being pro-marriage. It’s poignant and super cute, but still just tells it like it is.
“For the record,” typed Trapani, “I *know* that marriage is a lame institution rooted in religion (I’m an atheist) and patriarchy. BUT, my parents had a great marriage—I watched my Dad come home from work and kiss my Mom hello every evening 34 years into it, genuinely happy to see her—and I wanted that same thing with Terra. (And that’s IT—as mushy as I’m getting! Shutting up now!)” (via radar)
Yeah, I’m totally making hand hearts right now, what of it?

Who could possibly hate on these adorable ladies?

Besides being about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, Del Martin, 87, and Phyllis Lyon, 83, have been by each other’s side for 55 years as they’ve battled for gay rights. Thanks and congratulations ladies!

It’s official! At 5pm today, the ban on gay marriage overturns in California! And at 5:01, Robin Tyler and Diane Olsen will be the first same-sex couple in L.A. to get hitched.
Now, I’ll admit that I have my own issues with marriage in general and the whole history of it, and when I watch shows like Bridezilla or look at the price tag of a dress you only wear once for a few hours (not to even mention the idea of women as property), I throw up in my mouth a little bit. But when I see something like this – a couple like Robin Tyler and Diane Olsen, who have been together for 15 years and tried to get married 8 TIMES and been denied, I get all misty-eyed and heart-warmed. I once read this magazine article where this writer was talking about how the fact that anyone can commit to anything these days is a damn miracle, so even though she wasn’t that into the idea a marriage, she accepted and celebrated her friend’s wedding. I can’t remember where I read this, but it just about sums up how I feel about marriage as a celebration of love.
Anways, congratulations to all the same-sexers getting married today and in the future!

“It is because of me — I definitely think [my show] has helped the movement. Before it came out, everyone was still a little apprehensive about [same sex relationships]. Then they realized, ‘Wow, everyone is really into this stuff, and it is fine.’ The next thing you know, [gay marriage] is legal.”
— Tila Tequila to Us magazine on how she contributed to the legalization of gay marriage in California
She should do something about that pesky war next. Maybe she could “come out” as being against it. You know, build on the incredible momentum she’s built with the whole gay rights thing.

Finally California got it’s act together and overturned the gay marriage ban. I’m not one to usually talk about political stuff like this on the blog, but seriously people, it’s about time.
Breaking news story below:
SAN FRANCISCO – The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry.
The justices released the 4-3 decision Thursday, saying that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George.
“Under these circumstances, we cannot find that retention of the traditional definition of marriage constitutes a compelling state interest,” the court said in a majority decision.
“Accordingly, we conclude that to the extent the current California statutory provisions limit marriage to opposite-sex couples, these statutes are unconstitutional.”
The cases were brought by the city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and another gay rights group in March 2004 after the court halted San Francisco’s monthlong same-sex wedding march, which took place at Mayor Gavin Newsom’s direction. (via msnbc.com)
I’m not going to get into a discussion about gay marriage or my views about marriage in general, but I will say that for me, the fact that anyone can commit to anything is freaking amazing and I can’t see how people wanting to celebrate their commitment to each other is offensive.
Then again, I am a big liberal lezzie queer, so of course I am for the gays.
ok, my two cents.

Well, i thought that the people who are out there challenging books, instead of raising their children, would have felt so ridiculous in retrospect that they would leave And Tango Makes Three alone. Turns out I’m wrong again, because it was just announced that the children’s book about two male penguins and their family was the most challenged book again last year. Seriously folks, they’re penguins. I mean, I know their relationship is putting a strain on my immoral coupling, but I assume your magical marriage can withstand the pressure of homosexual penguins.

The gay-rights movement reaches a milestone Thursday when its agenda is the subject of a televised Democratic presidential forum. Yet many activists — craving bolder support for same-sex couples — view the unprecedented event with mixed emotions.
Though pleased that all the candidates of a major party are courting their votes and endorsing the bulk of their political wish-list, they are frustrated that none of the front-runners is calling for legalization of gay marriage.
The forum, to be held in Los Angeles, is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights group that has become increasingly influential in Democratic politics, and by Logo, the gay-oriented cable channel that will provide a live telecast and Internet simulcast.
Don’t forget to tune in Thursday night, 9 p.m. Eastern!
