Feminist Porn Awards

Today is my 2 year anniversary with HotMoviesForHer.com. Some days it feels like I’ve been working here forever (we just mesh well) and others seem like it’s only been a minute. I guess it’s true what they say about time flying when you are having fun. And fun is definitely what I’ve been having, peddling the girlie smut and bringing all I know about sexin’ to you ladies. I love my job and know that the pleasure side of sexuality is where I belong.
In celebration of my anniversary, I thought I’d write up some of my favorite HM4Her moments from the last two years. I know it’s a little self indulgent, but hey isn’t indulgence what porn is all about?
So, here goes nothin’!
- My very first sex tips column, Introducing J.D. – Your Newest Sexpert Extraordinaire! It was my first time really writing about sex for people on a larger scale. The beginning of something beautiful!
- Dinah Shore weekends 2008 & 2009. Sponosoring this massive lezzie event is not only an awesome way to help the lesbian community get to know us, it’s a fabulous way for us to really get to talk to tons of women about porn and what things they’d like to see on a porn site just for women. Watching Pat Benetar, Margaret Cho, the Idigo Girls, Lady Gaga and bunches of girls in binkinis is just a perk. Oh, that and hanging out with The Porn Librarian. It’s the only time of the year I get to see her face-to-face, so Palm Springs is extra fun!
- When we started offering Pink and White Productions flicks, including The Crashpad Series. I don’t think my desk will ever be the same after all that drooling… or my chair, to be honest. Read the rest of this entry »

Diane Keaton is coming to HBO to do porn. Ok, well not DO porn per se, but to star as a feminist icon that tries to restart the movement by creating a porn magazine for women! How freaking awesome is that?! Now that Sex and the City has moved to the big screen, HBO has been lacking for overt female sexuality, especially in the over 30 arena.
I don’t know when it will come out or what it’ll be called, but I do know that I’ll be parked on my couch the minute it comes on the tv!
Also, maybe this will help maintstream folks better understand that yes, porn is for women too and yes it can be feminist. (And there’s even an annual award show for feminist porn!)
Two out of two lesbians definitely agree that they are super excited and think that Diane Keaton is the perfect casting choice.

As I blogged about a bunch last week, the Good For Her 4th Annual Feminist Porn Awards were over the weekend and I was lucky enough to fly up to Toronto to be there. Because we helped sponsor the event (yay!), I had been emailing back and forth with Good For Her manager Alison Lee for the few months leading up to the weekend and was already super excited to meet her. I also followed a few of our favorite SF queers on twitter saying that they were going to be there as well, so before I even set foot across the border, I knew I was in for a pretty awesome weekend.
After taking an early flight into Toronto on Friday morning, I met up with Alison Lee (from Good for Her) and NoFauxxx.com‘s Courtney Trouble for lunch and had such fun chatting all about queer porn and the upcoming awards later that evening. Total shoutouts to these fabulous ladies who rock the porn/sex/sexuality world with amazing style. Afterwards Trouble and I hit a vintage/screen printing shop nearby before I headed back to my room and took a much needed nap. Who wants to be exhausted at a late night event with a bunch of awesome porn folks? Not me!
I was invited to the pre-awards VIP party at the Berkley Church (where the awards were held – yep, in a church!) so I glammed up and headed over to the venue a little early to get a chance to meet everyone before the actual ceremony started. That turned out to be a great idea, because there weren’t a ton of people at the VIP party, so it was easy to make my way over to people and introduce myself. As it turns out, most of the San Francisco queer porn circle was nominated for Feminist Porn Awards, so a bunch of them headed north to attend. I hung out with the amazingly awesome Jiz Lee, Syd Blakovich, Madison Young and Dylan Ryan, along with Courtney Trouble and I snagged a seat next to Trannywood’s Ian Sparks.

When I first started working here at HM4Her, there were a ton of porn stars that I had never heard of before. Sure I knew the bigger names in porn for women – like Candida Royalle and Nina Hartley, but I was far from an expert in all the amazing women I would soon get to know intimately… on film. I remember the first time I ever watched April Flores on screen. I saw the box cover of Voluptuous Life and knew that it was the next movie I needed to review. A zaftig chick myself, it was awesome to see a curvy lady take over the film in a totally hot and thoroughly non-exploitative way. As I took in more and more of her movies and get to chat with her over email a few times, I got to know April Flores and more than just the knockout bombshell posing for the camera. I met an extremely smart and talented woman with a giant heart and a confidence to match. Her passion for bringing sexy big gals to the screen fuels my girl boner and has me super excited to talk about my Top 5 April Flores flicks!

Just a reminder that the always amazing Feminist Porn Awards are tonight! The 4th Annual awards created by Good For Her, a fabulous Canadian sex toy/book/dvd store, will be in Toronto, ON at the Berkley Church (315 Queen St.) at 9pm. As you read this, I am actually in Toronto, biding my time until the show tonight. Not only am I super excited for the FPA show, I actually get to present an award!!! Woohoo! Hopefully I get to take a bunch of pictures and meet a ton of awesome people. Plus there is a movie veiwing party on Saturday night! I’ll blog more about it on Tuesday.

Finally, it’s Friday. I’ve been waiting for this day all week. I’m actually in Toronto right now, hanging out until the Feminist Porn Awards tonight! Woohoo! In honor of being in the awesomeness that is Canada, I thought I’d pick a Canadian band for this week’s mixtape. The Cliks!
While I had heard of this Toronto-based band from friends, I never really listened to them or anything until we were at Dinah Shore a few weeks back and the lead singer, Lucas Silveira, came on stage and dueted with Margaret Cho. One listen to his voice and I was totally sold.
Enjoy it!

The 2009 Feminist Porn Awards, my favorite porn awards show of the year, is coming up later this week and not only am I super excited to see who takes home awards, I am extra thrilled because I get to be there! That’s right, HM4Her is sponsoring this grass-roots celebration of revolutionary sex positivity and hot, hot movies and I get to be a part of the action! I even get to present an award, which I am all squeallly (and crazy nervous) about. So, in honor of The Feminist Porn Awards taking place this week, I am dedicating the Top Five Tuesday to talking about my top five 2009 nominees. Picking only five titles out of the ridiculously awesome pool of nominees was really difficult and more than once I found myself thinking about renaming this week as “Top Ten Tuesday,” but eventually I settled on five that really grabbed my attention and had me fanning myself as I watched.
