Cecilia Tan

No one can argue that Cecilia Tan is an original writer. Her stories blend sci-fi, fantasy and erotica better than any I’ve read and this collection is another brilliant example of her gift. I have to admit that before reading her work, I wouldn’t have ever thought I would enjoy this genre. The idea of sci-fi/fantasy erotica makes me think of tales of chicks banging werewolves and whatnot. Not that I’m judging if you’re into that, it’s just not me. However, she is a talented writer who creates fantastic new realms that transport a reader into a sexy new world.

One of my favorite stories has to be Always, it’s a beautiful tale of the evolution of a polyfidelitous relationship. I can’t do it justice here, but it’s a really sweet look at a non-traditional family that is sexy and touching.

I also can’t write this without discussing Drumbeat, a short story that manages to make band geeks hot. I love knowing that there is a sexy story out there for those of you who lugged around tubas in your adolescent years. I read this one aloud to my partner, and while we snickered at the references to lycra and white gloves – we both had to admit that what takes place in the back of the equipment bus got our hearts beating a little faster.

It’s stories like this, along with her obvious way with words, that make Tan’s collection stand out from many others. She takes on alternate realities, different genders, bdsm and more with great success. Not every story will do it for you, but you have to respect her for writing them so well.

This is a must-have for those of you who enjoy science-fiction and fantasy. I also recommend it to erotica fans that are looking for something that will excite your imagination and test your boundaries.
