Candida Royalle

When it comes to porn for women, the first name is my mind is always Candida Royalle.  Long before there was a marketplace of women making dirty movies for women, there was Candida Royalle, creating porn she was interested in watching with her studio, Candida Royalle’s Femme.  This particular movie is from the late ‘90s, but Ms. Royalle has been rocking the porno screen since the mid ‘80s, giving us what we wanted before we even knew it could be an option – and always mixing interesting stories with her tasteful, yet hardcore sexy, action.

Candida Royalle’s One Size Fits All is billed as a sex comedy in 5 acts, but really it reminds me more of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” though with a risqué purple dress that makes all of the people who owned it think about the amazing sex they had while wearing it, and/or have amazing sex while trying it on.

Funny enough, out of a group of four friends, it just so happens that two of the women have owned the dress before, from the same dirty dog man who gave it to each of them – and the third friend found it in a thrift store after it was dropped off there by yet another woman.  They offer it up to the fourth friend to borrow (and her assistant who tries it out), making it so every single person in the movie that wears that dress gets the awesome fucking of their life (five in total – hence the five acts).

My favorite of the bunch is, of course, Nina Hartley.  She is charming as she gets so excited over trying on the dress and reminiscing about the amazing sex she had with the man who gave it to her.  We get to see that action, so it’s easy for us to see why she would want to think about all those hot memories.  The guy (Mark Davis) is super sexy and quite the attentive lover, giving Nina (Tammy, in the movie) everything she wants.  Too bad he ends up being a jerk later in the movie, which we find out, but don’t see.  The rest of the sex is really exciting too – including an amazing hot fitting room scene with Tom Byron and Gina Rome.  Plus we even get a cameo from director Candida herself in the beginning.

I don’t know if I’d call this a “sex comedy” as it is touted, but it’s definitely a great plot-driven porn with a smart story, great cast, and smokin’ sex.  Check it out!

A Man With A Maid – Tales Of Victorian Lust: This Sweet Sinner flick by director Nica Noelle is a little less chock full of soft focus sensuality than the rest of this list, but totally sexy and romantic in a different, harder-core way.  Me likey!

Three Daughters: Candida Royalle was one of the first folks to make sensual porn, back in the 1980s when she began Femme Productions.  And not that they must exist together, but she also was the first pornographer to make movies specifically for women.  Whether it’s the parent’s rekindling their love, or the daughters just finding their sexual selves, this movie is packed with passion! Check it out!

Life, Love, Lust:  Everything Erika Lust touches is amazingly sexy, passionate and super duper hot.  This award-winning three scene masterpiece is seriously one to watch, trust me on this!

We are so excited that Petra Joy is back with another installment of her seriously amazing series Her Porn.   Compiling the best of porn for ladies from a whole host of videos, Joy has created a totally fun and inspiring romp around the sexy playground and found so many super sexy scenarios for us to enjoy.  From the standard plumber comes over to bone story (scene 1), all the way to the rose colored memories of the 17^th (and last) scene, these vignettes are filled with some of the hottest, and most interesting erotic experiences.

What I really love most about the Her Porn series is that it’s not just a super long porno featuring one director’s content over and over again.  These compilations take sexy scenes from a variety of really fucking talented ladies that know how to bring their amazingly arousing visions to the screen.  This volume, 2, includes pieces from Anna Brownfield, Candida Royalle, Maria Beatty, Shine Louise Houston, Annie Sprinkle, and of course, Petra Joy herself.  If that list doesn’t send a few tingles down your pants, I’m not sure what will!

There really is no way to qualify which of these scenes were my favorites.  Honestly, they are all so completely different and amazing that it’s near impossible to talk about one over the other.  The few that stood out so intensely in my mind were the ones that made me really think, or made me wish I was home under the covers.  The two that made me sit down and really think about were definitely ‘Dildoman’ (scene 4) and ‘Who Wears The Dress?’ (scene 5).

‘Dildoman’ is a animated short that ends up featuring a woman fucking another woman with a man, using him as a dildo (sorry for the spoilers).  I wasn’t sure how to take it and I needed a minute to process through the whole thing before moving on.  Man, I love porn that makes me think!

With ‘Who Wears The Dress’ a male/female couple is fighting because they are both wearing the same dress to a fancy occasion and the woman is not happy that her man is dressed as woman, but it turns to super hot action as they fight.  I love that the story turns on its head and have never seen anything like it.  Bravo to Candida Royalle for breaking stereotype boundaries and bringing us such super hotness.

On the making-me-melt tip, the top stop goes to scene 13, which is a snippet from Shine Louise Houston’s  ‘Champion,’ which I’ve been dying to see for years.  I am actually really embarrassed to admit that I’ve never seen it!  And just getting this tiny taste has me super geared up to see the whole thing.  Just watch it and you will know what I mean.  Syd and Dallas, be still my horny heart!

You need to watch this movie!

Last week was a banner week over here at HM4Her. In the last few months, lawmakers in California have been lobbying to require that condoms/barriers be used when making porn.

Do you think that mandatory condom/barrier use in porn would show a more realistic portrayal of sex, or would it detract from the fantasy aspect of porn? Why?

I think barriers and condoms should be the “best practices” or the norm that everyone just assumes. And those barriers should be shown going on. I know a lot of folks can get frustrated getting a condom on a huge toy, when it seems so easy in movies. And showing how to avoid cross contamination, such as switching out condoms or gloves when moving from one hole to another should be encouraged. I’m always shocked at folks thinking they are being great at barriers, but then not being aware of where they just put those barriers.

I personally don’t think it should be a law…but it is key to our business model at Trannywood Pictures and Dolores Park Studios, to show as often as possible the use of barriers in hot, sexy, and natural ways.

I’ve been using condoms in my Femme Productions movies since 1988 and it hasn’t hurt their appeal one bit. In fact my audience seems to have appreciated my concern for my actors and my desire to set a good example. A few of them even said watching porn stars have unsafe sex was like watching a two actors performing a shoot-out in a western movie with loaded guns! As for the fantasy element, when it was meant to be a fantasy or a dream sequence I simply wouldn’t show that we used condoms. The one exception was when they were real-life couples or married. In that case if they were playing strangers or new lovers I would do an establishing shot showing them taking out a condom and then not worry about it.

These days it’s not uncommon to look behind the porno camera and see a woman calling the shots. Be it writing, directing, producing, etc. – ladies are taking over behind the scenes and creating a whole array of awesome movies, set from a female point of view.

While this estrogen insurgence into the porno process shows itself more readily nowadays, it’s far from a new concept. Women have held their places in porn (in the clothing on portion) for years, starting in the “Golden Age of Porn” – that period of time in the ‘70s and ‘80s when porn was just entering the mainstream.

We always love talking about ladies that represent in porn, but there is a super special reason we’re bringing it to the forefront today.

We have releasing Cecil Howard’s Scoundrels, for a limited run until July 22nd! And along with being the very first movie to win AVN’s Best Film Award, Scoundrels was actually written by a woman – Anne Randall.

According to the June 1983 edition of AVN (only the sixth edition!):

Thanks to Anne Randall’s magnificent script, Scoundrels gives us three-dimensional characters that rarely find their way into adult plots. This family is sensitive and very normal in their feelings; the abnormalities come from the unstable setting. Scoundrels takes serious themes (the kinds that Taboo and Roommates tried to tackle) one step further, showing that its subject can be erotic and dangerous at the same time. … Scoundrels classifies as thinking man’s porn.

This month is all about porn parodies.  Whether you love them or hate them, it’s time to face the music – they are trendier than any pop culture reference I could possibly make here (ok, how about trendier than the Rachel haircut on Friends – ha see, they pornofied that too!).  All of our favorite sitcoms of the last 30 years have been sucked and fucked within an inch of their commercial breaks – nothing is sacred!  So, with that in mind, we wanted to know what folks thought, inside the industry.

This month’s question:

In the last year, the porn industry seems to have exploded with parodies and spoofs of every television show/movie that has ever been popular – from Not The Bradys XXX to This Isn’t The Twilight Saga New Moon – The XXX Parody, and everything in between.  How do you feel about the parody trend? Do you think it benefits/hinders the industry? Why?

I’m not an expert on the mainstream industry that makes these kinds of films, but even if they’re just recycling old ideas and following the dollar signs until the fad tapers off – at least it’s an opportunity to bring humor, plot, and creativity onto a mainstream porn film set.  It’s starting to get pretty old, and it makes the “go-machine-go” financial outlook in porn valley look pretty transparent.
