Headgear is always an interesting purchase for me, usually involving the decision to accept varying degrees of hair carnage as not many items are made with African American hair in mind, and any black girl will tell you in an instant – ‘I don’t care what was going on, it stops being fun the moment my hair gets messed up.’  So when I noticed the Silk Sashay Blindfold from Leatherbeaten, I knew I’d have to give it a try.

Made from real silk with a lovely black and red dragon motif, this was one piece of headgear I was sure wouldn’t pull on my precious mane, as silk and satin are about the only two materials that won’t. Of course after I’d checked on my hair’s safety, I was a little concerned that my hair might stain or otherwise ruin my lovely new silk blindfold. Unfortunately I didn’t see any care instructions and I’m reluctant to take my new silk blindfold to the dry cleaners, so I’m guessing this is going to have a set number of very careful uses before it becomes too soiled with play or hair products to continue using – or I’ll suck it up and stick it in the wash eventually.

So what was it like to wear? In a word – terrifying.If only because I made the mistake of starting off by taking the blindfold to bed with me. I’ve got a window in my bedroom and all that dang light first thing in the morning grows increasingly unpleasant, so I figured the blindfold would let me sleep longer and more deeply. Unfortunately, I’m not entirely done with allergy season and the soft, but ever present, feel of the blindfold, coupled with a sudden lack of air thanks to my allergies soon had me panicked, feeling suffocated in the middle of the night and attempting to rip the thing off my face.

Of course I had other uses for my Silk Sashay and I soon had a willing volunteer outfitted for some blindfolded fun and games. That went much better than sleeping with the thing, as we had a great time stumping each other with the mask on (blindfolded flavor tasting, it’s amazing what you can’t identify without seeing it first) and I probably emptied out the entire contents of my fridge in a single night (note to self – don’t combine food play, blindfolds and 4/20 all at the same time again).

So what’s my verdict? Well, I wouldn’t recommend it for use all on its own, unless you’re sure you can handle the experience, but it’s a great combo toy to add to your collection and then whip out when you’re getting a little tired of your old stale routines.
