Batteries Hopefully Included: Buying the Perfect Vibrator

Not all vibrators are created equally. Some buzz loudly, some are whisper quiet, some are curved, big, small, disguised, and waterproof… but all (aside from the “body massagers”) are designed with one thing in mind – to get you off. Whether it needs to be plugged into the wall socket or it can be brought along in your purse disguised as a tube of lipstick, your vibrator can be a source of totally hot and completely racy enjoyment – both alone and with others.

A vibrator is type of sex toy that vibrates to stimulate the nerves when held against (or inside) the body. Originally created in the 1800s as a tool to calm hysteria in women (to basically do what is now called masturbation), modern day vibes are almost always used only for sexual pleasure. Just like dildos, vibrators come in all shapes, sizes, colors and materials (most are silicone, rubber, jelly rubber or plastic).

With lots of types to choose from, buying a vibrator can be an overwhelming endeavor. Before you even hit the web or check out your local shop, think about making a list (even a mental one) of everything that is important to you. What do you want out of your toy? Do you have roommates and need it to be as quiet as possible? Do you want to be able to play in the bathtub? What about penetration? Are you looking for a vibe that you can use internally or do you just want clit stimulation? Or both?

If you have an idea of what kind of vibe you want before you look, it will be easier to weed out the ones that don’t fill your needs. That doesn’t mean that you can’t change your mind once you see what’s out there. You might not even think of something that’s a major requirement until you see a toy that doesn’t fit the bill. Or maybe you’ll see a vibe that looks so hot that you’re willing to forgo even the biggest of barriers.

Here are a few different types (definitely not all-this would be a book!) of vibrators to get you thinking about what’s out there.

Penetrative:

Traditional

Traditional vibrators are usually more phallic in shape and can be used for penetration. Most have the speed changing switch or dial on the base (or sometimes the base itself turns to change the speed). These toys come in different textures, from totally smooth to ribbed or swirly, and just as with dildos, some come with a defined penis head. Most traditional vibes are battery operated.

Dual Stimulation

Dual stim vibrators are vibrating penetrative toys that have an attached clitoral stimulator. These are really nice because you get two toys for the price of one – and they’re attached so you can always find one if you can find the other. (Just don’t lose both…)

The most popular one of these is the Rabbit. Sometimes these toys (like the one linked above) have an added bonus, such as pearls that move around in the shaft while it vibrates. Just one thing to know: dual stimulation vibes are usually known to have clit stimulators shaped like animals, though not all do. I’ve seen rabbits, dolphins and even beavers. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not into my sex toys having faces, so I just wanted to give you a heads up. Also, these are usually battery operated.

G-Spot

Some vibrators are especially designed to reach and stimulate the g-spot. These vibes have a curved tip for maximum g-spot contact. G-spot vibrators are super fun because they allow you to really stimulate your g-spot solo, without causing serious wrist injury… or that may just be me…

Non-Penetrative:

Clitoral

Clitoral vibes are non-penetrative toys that are usually shaped to stimulate the clit as best as possible. Because they are not phallic, most are fairly small.

Finger

Most finger vibes (clit stimulators) have a little sleeve (most are made of rubber or jelly rubber) that houses a mini vibrator and a sleeve or ring to slide your finger into. I like finger vibes because they give you another way to incorporate your own fingers into the mix, which gives you more control over the pressure and added manual stimulation.

Some toys are made to play with two or more fingers. Finger vibes are usually small and easily portable for travel.

Pocket Rocket

Sounds like what it is – a powerful little bugger that’s small enough to fit nicely in pocket or purse with out being conspicuous. Though Pocket Rocket is technically a brand name for a specific vibrator, the term is also used to describe other small, similar toys. About five or so inches long, these mini clitoral vibes tend to look more like a small keychain flashlight than anything overtly sexual. While fairly discreet, they are anything but quiet. Bottom line: Small, powerful, loud. Oh well, two out of three ain’t bad.

Massagers

You know the ones I’m talking about. The “body massagers” in the drug store, billed as sore muscle relievers. The ones that come with all those attachments. Yeah, back massager… if you say so. These toys are usually a bit bigger and louder and can either be battery operated or plug into the wall. They are also known to be pretty powerful and deliver strong vibrations. Oooh, and don’t forget, you can actually use these as body massagers as well! Perfect for erotic massage or just to soothe poor muscles (from lots of rough sex…).

Eggs and Bullets

Shaped like bullets and eggs, these mini clit stimulating vibes are sometimes attached to a controller and sometimes controlled by a button on the tip. Sometimes the smaller bullets can be inserted into other toys that are specifically made to hold them, such as certian harnesses and dildos.

Discreet

While some toys are larger and quite obviously used for sexual purposes, there are some pretty crafty vibe companies that make toys that are completely disguised as something else. Vibes like the Discretion Bullet, which looks like an ordinary make-up compact, are perfect for someone that travels often and doesn’t necessarily want airport security to pull out their Hitachi Magic Wand, or someone with kids that might find it.

Note: Just remember, when you travel, take your batteries out and pack them separately. Keeps the toy from going on and burning the batteries, as well as protects it if the batteries leak. Some neat discreets I’ve seen are a blush brush, tube of lipstick and even a “cell phone.” Makes you wonder what other people are walking around with in their purses and bags.

Many of these vibes come in different types of materials, have varying speeds and intensity, and noise levels. Some are even waterproof. Once you decide which kind you want, take a look at the specifics of each brand and each toy out there to figure out exactly what toy will work best to get you going.
