I just finished reading a great article on msncbc.com, of all places, about women execs in the adult industry. Surprisingly, it’s interesting, well done and they took they time to talk to a number of top women in the industry.
I love when women who are more intelligent than I are able to articulate ideas I feel strongly about, like UC-Santa Barbara’s Constance Penley when talking about how the adult industry is sometimes defined by bad things that happen in every where:
Name an industry that’s different, she said. Because porn involves sex it is subject to what Penley calls “exceptionalism.” It is not judged in the bigger cultural context. But it should be. “You have to ask: Does it have more drug abuse or more suicides, more incidents of girls being sexually abused as children, more cosmetic surgery than Hollywood, TV, the recording industry?” she said. The answer, she pointed out, is probably not. So why pick on sex movies?
This is one of the more fair pieces I’ve read on women in the industry and a must read for any one who’s slightly interested.
