About a week ago, I blogged a post about non-porn porn and how people have begun calling anything exciting and inticing “porn” (linked here for anyone who has a 24 hour memory, like me). In that post, I cited food porn as an example of how pop culture has swooped in stole “porn” from the sexin’ and how we use the word “porn” to describe anything we want to sink our teeth into.
I guess that was a pretty good example, because in reality, food porn is a lot closer to porn porn than I ever would have expected.
Grad student Valerie Bourdeau starting noticing undeniable connections between food porn and sex porn as she researched more and more into both subjects. She found the same kind of voyerism and exaggerated images that humans are instinctually drawn to in both food and in a parnter/sexual experieince. As well, Bourdeau’s research showed that shooting food and shooting naked people both employ the same techniques of saturation colors and going for the “most appealing” variety.
Says Ms. Bourdeau: “In sex porn, they’ll be emphasizing things we’re wired to look for — beauty, youth, exaggerated sexual characteristics. And in food porn, it’s kind of the same thing. It emphasizes things we’re wired to look for in food — signs of freshness and ripeness and colour.”
It makes sense… I just hope we don’t start talking about Flower Porn. I am not about to go to that Georgia O’Keeffe place quite yet. It’s a little too close for comfort.
