1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
In 1998, I approached a number of studios about producing a video version of my book, The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women. John “Buttman” Stagliano agreed to do it. He, Ernest Greene, and I all co-directed it, and John shot it. I was in the final scene: an anal orgy with the entire cast.
2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I’m doing it! Porn is just one of many of my jobs. I write columns for The Village Voice and Taboo, and I have written four books. I lectures at colleges and universities and teach sex and relationship workshops around the world. I run two websites, puckerup.com and openingup.net. I co-produce a bi-annual sex-positive conference called Dark Odyssey.
3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
You can never make assumptions about people or assume you know what they need to have a safe, positive working environment. You have to ask them.
4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
After shooting a scene for my new film Rough Sex, Satine Phoenix was covered in dirt and Derrick Pierce’s cum. She was so excited about the scene and her chance to fulfill her fantasy that she came rushing toward me and gave me a huge hug. I was wearing a white T-shirt and suddenly it was covered in dirt and Derrick’s semen!
5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in industry?
One of the biggest misconceptions about women in industry is that they don’t want to be there, that they are all victims. In my experience, women have a diverse range of reasons for being in porn, different experiences in the industry, and they get different things out of it.
6. What did you do today?
I got on a plane to fly to Minneapolis to appear as a special guest at The Smitten Kitten’s Fifth Birthday Celebration. I was meeting Penny Flame and Adrianna Nicole there, and we were going to speak on a panel about my reality series, Chemistry.
7. What would you rather have done today?
Well, traveling isn’t always fun, but what I traveled too was pretty fucking cool! I guess if I could do anything else, I would be at home, in bed curled up with my partner and our dogs watching Project Runway or The Wire.
8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
That’s so tough! I’d love to do a movie with Sharon Mitchell and Nina Hartley, who were in the first porn movie I ever saw. Annie Sprinkle, definitely. And Belladonna, for sure, that would be amazing.
9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
As a director, this could get me in trouble! Nina Hartley is unbelievable, as a performer and a person. If you watch all my movies, you’ll notice there are a few people who make repeat appearances: Adrianna Nicole, Roxy DeVille, Marie Luv, Penny Flame, Sarah Blake, Derrick Pierce, Mr. Marcus, Daniel (aka Danny Wylde), Marcos Leon, Mark Davis, and Christian. Although I have only worked with them once, I also love Manuel Ferrara, Jada Fire, Satine Phoenix, Dana DeArmond, Joanna Angel, Daisy Marie, Harmony, Madison Young, Lorelei Lee, Sinnamon Love, Nat Turnher, Sasha Grey, and Tyler Knight. Then there are all the people I have yet to work with who are on my list: Sean Michaels, Belladonna, and Bobbi Starr come to mind. And I know I must be forgetting some people!
10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
Put $5 in the bank. Use $15 to start a new business.
11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
We’d have universal healthcare for everyone. And Anal-Eze would be outlawed.
12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
I recently walked up to my partner’s aunt and introduced myself as if we had never met, when we had—several times. I was mortified.
13. Which is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
Definitely Chemistry. The series gets better with each volume, and it’s always such a truly amazing experience.
14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?
I’d like to be able to transport myself wherever I need to go. The amount of time I spend on planes and trains, and in cars, I could be doing something more productive!
15. Meat or veggie?
When I was 16, I became a vegetarian. I was also vegan for a year in college. Then I was a vegetarian who ate fish for about 15 years. Last year, we had an organic, free-range turkey at Thanksgiving and I ate some. I liked it! Ever since, I have gone back to eating chicken and turkey. And bacon. And the occasional bite of filet mignon.
16. What is your favorite book?
House Rules by Heather Lewis.
17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
People who spend a lot of energy being mean to other people.
18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
Masturbate! Get to know your own body, how it works, and what you like. If you cannot give yourself an orgasm, it’s too tall of an order to ask someone else to do it.
19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Yikes! Another tough question. Shortbus. How’s that for skirting the question?
20. Tell me one thing you’ve never told anyone else.
Considering I write about my life on a regular basis, this is a tough one. At least one person knows everything. I am an open book.
