Petra Joy is the producer and director of Stawberry Seductress – a company that produces erotic photographs and films that are tailor-made for women with a focus on female pleasure. Her unique and artistic erotic films promote sensual, creative sex.

Petra has an MA in film studios and a background in television. She has been creating art-core porn for five years. Her motto is “Feeling it, not faking it!” and she chooses to work with real life lovers to capture genuine chemistry. Petra prides herself in visualizing female fantasies rather than repeating a male view of female sexuality all over again. Her films empower ,inspire and liberate women and men. Petra has produced, directed and filmed three feature films so far.

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I launched my company “Strawberry Seductress” in 2004 to provide an intimate and creative erotic photo service for women and couples and make erotic art-core films. A lot of my photography customers always asked me what porn I recommend and because there was nothing at the time that turned me on and that I could recommend to other women, I decided to shoot my own. From working in TV I had all my own video gear and shot my first film “Sexual Sushi” with friends of mine in my apartment over two exciting weekends.

Sexuality and gender roles have always been my favorite subjects. I wrote my MA thesis on the image of female sexuality in Nazi propaganda films and produced 50 documentaries for an award winning adult program on German TV. It has always been a challenge for me to discover and unveil sexuality from a woman’s point of view.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I don’t consider myself as part of the industry. I am an independent filmmaker and artist, breaking all the rules that the adult industry forged. I still work as a journalist and photographer. I cannot live from my erotic film productions as they are so expensive to produce and I only sell small amounts of the finished film to a select few distributers who are willing to stock arty porn– I have the most expensive hobby in the world.

3. What is the best thing you have learned or best advice you have received from industry.
I did not receive any advice from the industry but was discouraged from getting my films out there for years. I was told my films are too soft, too short, too this and too that. I was told that without featuring the big porn stars or showing the usual sexual scenarios (followed by a cum shot) my films would never be a success. Support and advice came from other women. Candida Royalle told me to make sure I will get a sales report regularly when selling a films license. Due to her advice I chased a company that had been printing my DVDs and selling them for two years without giving me a sales report. I was wrong. It turned out that they printed and sold lots of my films and owed me a lot of money.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
I love to shoot spoof porn as a way to criticize mainstream porn by using humor. When we filmed the car wash parody scene with oiled up men and the girl wearing a wig and fake nails, they fake fucked her so hard over the bonnet that the car started rocking, she slipped off and her wig came off. We laughed so much that it was almost impossible to carry on filming.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in industry?
That women do whatever they do in a sexual context to please men. Men are still considered the centre of the erotic universe. But many women working behind or in front of the camera do what they do for themselves or to please other women. I do what I do for myself as a means of artistic expression and to liberate and inspire other women. If men enjoy watching my films too, then it’s a bonus.

6. What did you do today?
Answered my emails, wrote my blog, downloaded and edited my pictures from the FICEB award in Madrid, spoke to my accountant, designed three porn workshop for the EROTICA show in London, sent 13 items from the post office and queued for 20 minutes (grrrr), answered this interview, downloaded some alternative porn, did some weights in the gym, went shopping for food, cleaned my flat and am now about to chill out. It’s 23.30.

7. What would you rather have done today?
It’s been a hot sunny day, so I would have loved to spend all day on my local beach with a trashy novel, my swimming goggles and and rum and raisin ice cream.

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
James Dean and David Beckham as the leads for some bi or gay male action.
Betty Page for a vintage bondage scene.
Marilyn Monroe as the queen bee in a sensual lesbian group play scene.
And Madonna as a wicked dom with a stable full of hunky, willing bi boys.

9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
I don’t have any. I prefer “amateurs” as there is more feeling and less faking involved in the shooting experience. I also prefer natural rather than surgically enhanced bodies.

10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
Buy a bottle of champagne, some strawberries and smoked salmon for one last feast before tightening the belt for good.

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
I would change the environmental policy towards a more sustainable life style that will preserve our amazing planet as much as it is still possible for us and the next generations. I love this world and it upsets me how little we care. We need this home and need to look after it otherwise all other things we achieve will become meaningless.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
Mistaken someone’s identity. I gave a trade show organizer one of my films as a present only to realize 30 seconds later that the guy was actually one of my minor distributers who looked identical to the show organizer. Needless to say that the distributer had already a dozen copies of my film but he took my seemingly odd gesture well.

13. Which is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
“Female Fantasies”, my second film as it was so liberating and groundbreaking to visualize my own and my girlfriend’s sexual fantasies. It was hard work to shoot the scuba scene with a stinking cold, unable to equalize my ears properly for the increased underwater pressure but the scene turned out pure weightless magic. The silhouette scenes were shot at three am in the rain at 8 degrees but the sensual and artistic images were worth it. The whole team that was involved in this production became a kind of kinky family and we all travelled together to the first porn film fest 2006 in Berlin where the film premiered in a huge sold out cinema. It’s the stuff that dreams are made off.

14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?

To fly. Definitely. I got a taste of it in scuba diving and now I want more. It would make travelling so much easier too. I love being in lots of exciting places but hate public transport. No more trains, busses and planes, just spread my wings and fly ! YEAH.

15. Meat or veggie?
Veggie, and fish. Lots of it. I am addicted to raw salads, exotic fruits and shellfish.

16. What is your favorite book?
Madonna’s Book “Sex” – OK it’s a photo book with only very little text in it but I am a very visual person and this book has inspired me over and over again for two decades now.

17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
In porn: fake boobs and nails, the performers looking into camera, cum shots in the woman’s face and eyes (it stings!), anal without lube and hairy, beer-bellied men wearing socks and watches.

In life: dishonesty. I hate lies. What is the point of lying? – you will be found out anyway and the person lied to will feel betrayed.

Oh and I hate to wait for anything or anybody. I am probably the most impatient person you will ever meet.

18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
Don’t worry about what you look like in bed. When you are having sex – let it all go and allow yourself to be sweaty, with knotted hair and a red patches of excitement on your skin. Just be yourself and don’t try to copy a famous glamour model or porn star or look perfect for your partner. The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself. It works for you and will work for your lover.

19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Apart from my own – as a straight film “The Gift” by Roberto Valtuena.
It is a Spanish film by a male director but apart from one scene I love all the scenes and the creative way they have been shot with and ever moving camera powered by steadycams, cranes and dollies. The film is arty and very different from mainstream porn. It is the director’s first erotic film and it shows that he is not jaded yet and tied down by the porn rules (although he does not dare to show the orgasms differently than with the money shots). As a lesbian and fetish film the glorious film noir “Ecstasy In Berlin” by the talented Maria Beatty.

20. Tell me one thing you’ve never told anyone else.
I can’t think of anything. I wear my heart on my sleeve and talk about my thoughts and emotions honestly and openly and there are no secrets or skeletons in the cupboard. There are a lot of exciting things I have seen and done but I have always told at least one person about them.
