There aren’t many people out there doing what Morty Diamond does. And by what he does, I mean deconstructing gender and teasing apart binaries, one mind-blowing orgasm at a time. Two movies deep into his Morty Diamond Productions studio, director/producer Diamond has turned the trans/queer porn genre upside down with thoughtfully sexy and wildly arousing works that engage both your brains and your bits. Thank you, Morty, for reminding us just how hot we are for smart porn!

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I got started making porn in 2003 when I was unhappy with the amount of erotic movies showing transgender sex in a positive and sexy way. I had a few thousand dollars I had saved up for a trip to Europe but decided instead to shoot a porn!
2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I do a lot of other things other than make porn. I am a performance artist and a writer as well.
3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from the industry?
One of the best pieces of advice I gave myself when I started making porn is the simple “do what you love” mantra. I’m trans and I love trans people and I wouldn’t be making any other porn because my heart wouldn’t be in it.
4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
So many funny things happen on set when you have naked people fucking and you’re trying to film it! One funny experience I had was the time I was shooting TrannyFags and I wanted to shoot inside this place called “The Spas” in San Francisco, a place where you can rent out a private room with a big hot tub and sauna by the hour.
So I had to cover up all of the film equipment and make it look like it was clothes in duffle bags, went to the counter and was like “Me and my business partners would like to rent a room.” Hilarious! I kept freaking that someone would knock on the door and find me trying to rig up my lights and my camera and call the cops.
5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about trans folks and trans identity in the industry?
That there is a particular “trans body.” Transgender people have a myriad of body types, some choose hormones and surgery and some do not. I wish more people would understand that you do not have to “graduate” to a trans body by altering it somehow.
6. What did you do today?
It’s the beginning of my day. I ate cereal and two kiwis, had some mint tea and sat down to write these answers.
7. What would you rather have done today?
Well, I would rather be walking around Central Park, it’s a rare sunny day out, but instead I am headed to my job (no I don’t make enough money making porn, believe it).
8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
Porn:: Annie Sprinkle / Barbara Carrellas / Belladonna /
Sasha Grey
Feature film:: Robert Deniro (when he was young)/ Viggo Mortenson/ Natalie Wood!
9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
Annie Sprinkle and Mr. Marcus.
10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
I would go get a bunch of kale, tofu and brown rice and eat for a week until I could get more money! Eating good is first on my list.
11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
Do away with the male or female check boxes on all forms.
Then bring the soldiers home and stop all war.
12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
Taken too many magic mushrooms and vomit ten times while walking around Greenwich Village.
13. Which is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
It’s a tie between producing Trans Entities and putting together my anthology “From The Inside Out, FTM and Beyond.”
14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?
The power to fall in and out of love and make it not hurt.
15. Meat or veggie?
I eat mostly fish and veggies. Red meat gives me bloat, hard to digest.
16. What is your favorite book?
Without a doubt Carson McCullers’ “The Heart Is A Lonley Hunter.”
17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
In myself: laziness. In others: when young people don’t give up their seat on the train for old people.
18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
Breathe, relax and talk about what it is you want, that’s ubiquitous for all people. Also, fire up your imagination, there is a whole new sex life waiting in the far reaches of your mind.
19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Top Three: Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle, Kansas City Trucking Co., The Crash Pad.
20. Tell me one thing you’ve never told anyone else.
How about I gotta go…

Whoo hoo! Great interview. I know we (trannywood pictures) owe a lot to Morty for jump starting the genre and showing a diversity of trans male actors.
Morty, love you!
Thank you for your comment to #5. (The misconception that there is a “trans body”.)
As someone who borderlines between trans and genderqueer but whom is almost consistently read as female, particularly when naked and in porn, it means a lot to me to have that conception put out there. I think it’s another reason why a lot of trans identified folks are weary of performing in porn, and I hope you’ll be an inspiration to help them love their physical selves. (And others!)
