So thanks in small part to my guilty pleasure, Bel Ami, and to the upcoming romantic holiday I was feeling the need for something on the love story side of things. Hard to find in hentai titles but I’m hopeful that “Swallowtail Inn” might do the trick.
The description describes it as the tale of a woman in love – an auspicious start. Yuriko is that woman, a widow and owner of the Swallowtail Inn, after her husband’s death the business falls into greater and greater disrepair. Yuriko struggles with the burdens of trying to keep the business running and occasionally masturbates while doing chores when one day she meets a new man. Hot and mysterious with a complete lack of memory and a sweet helpful nature, Yuriko quickly takes him into the inn and names him Kenji. Shortly after that the secret method of how she’s been keeping the inn afloat is revealed to Kenji, Yuriko has been allowing customers to use her body in all kinds of debauched ways in order to pay the bills.
Sex scenes include pretty heavy bondage, lots of food as well as several dripping wet masturbation scenes. While the character and set designs are really nice many of the sex scenes suffer from ‘faceless monster’ syndrome. Sometimes in hentai, when the characters are being both particularly horrible and anonymous, then your presented with a dark featureless outline instead of a detailed character.
The upside of this is that Kenji’s scenes with Yuriko are in full detail and seem more intimate as the other scenes do not. Also Yuriko asserts herself in a positive way in their first scene together, insisting that she’s been humiliated enough. It’s a nice change from the rest of the scenes and hentai in general. From then on Kenji becomes her ‘trainer’ as an ‘entertainer’ which basically means that have lots of talkative sex all over the inn, while Yuriko learns to shed her inhibitions.
Which is right around when things got rather weird – so her new lover has her deceased husbands skills, ok; so he’s ok with him hiring herself out to make rent, not great, but ok; so he’s helping her be the best ‘entertainer’ she can be and exploring her sexuality, ok. But I do not really understand the part where Kenji starts having sex with other emotionally starved inn workers as well as Yuriko’s younger sister in law.
Things do get better again as Kenji begins training the younger step sister in that at least the sex has a context in the story that makes sense. She’s willful and eager but she’s also ‘selfish,’ more interested in her own well being and pleasure than that of her guests. This selfishness manifests in her having what would normally be considered reasonable limits but of course isn’t what the faceless monsters are interested in so Kenji helps her get over it.
“So many things have happened” I didn’t quite know why that phrase turned up with such weighty meaning in so many of my regular animes till Yuriko said it while summing up the first half of “Swallowtail Inn” and masturbating, of course. Sadly only the first part of the “Swallowtail Inn” could be taken in a romantic context, after the weirdness starts things get less and less personal and more and more nebulous as the relationship bounds break down more and more. No matter how I slice it I don’t really take the whole harem style conclusion to be a satisfying romantic end in this situation (odd since I don’t mind it in anime series like “Tenchi” or “Elfen Lied”). Still it was a nice change from some of the darker hentai on the market especially if you’re the type that just loves to serve.
