So it’s October and I promised I’d take a look at some of the truly frightening hentai I’ve been holding back on till now. Don’t worry it doesn’t involve tentacles. In the world of hentai fanatics there are a few titles everyone knows, if you go to a hentai forum and ask around for the most debauched titles ever only a few names will come up: “Princess 69,” “Night Shift Nurses” and the “-saku” series. We don’t have “Princess 69″ and we’ve lost the copy of “Night Shift Nurses” that has English translations though you can still find a French version under “Docteur R. Hirazaka Gynecologue.”
The “-saku” series is probably one of the few hentai titles with a considerable number of episodes. It’s called the “-saku” series because each one is titled after the main villain whose names, appearance and actions are all disturbingly similar. Following the debaucheries of three brothers, Isaku (he has three episodes) Shusaku (also sometimes known as The Letch, and has a whopping six episodes) and Kisaku (has another three titles) the “-saku” series originally began as an eros game starting with the Isaku brother. It was a mostly text based puzzle type horror game in which the player is trying to escape a locked school with several friends. If the player made the wrong decision during gameplay it would result in one of his friends falling into Isaku’s hands and there would be a cut scene detailing that characters degradation. Definitely sounds worthy of a scary game.
The movie definitely starts out with some chilling elements including the details on why the other school building has been abandoned and boarded up. By the time that Isaku comes rumbling onto the scene with his hand cart and stooped sweaty face, I’m definitely feeling that old horror movie chill. He gives everyone on the scene the creeps and I’m not all that impressed with him either (he’s definitely not the stuff of yaoi fangirl fantasies).
There’s lots of implied drama, backgrounds and hidden tensions in the first few minutes of the movie that remind me really strongly of some horror movies, (“Scream” comes to mind off the top of my head) the kind that want you to get invested in the characters really quickly because most of the rest of the film is going to be devoted to them running around blindly and screaming. I love those kinds of horror movies! So far so good and at this point I’m wondering why the “-saku” series has such a fearsome reputation.
The drawing style is pretty antiquated, as is to be expected with the first title in a long series like this one. It’s still fun to watch but one look and I already know the sex scenes when they come are going to suffer because of it. Also the choice of coloring for the subtitles make them hard to see in the beginning as they blend in with the scene sometimes, making it harder to catch what’s going on. Thankfully the subtitles stand out much better later on as things start to get sketchy and the students gather in the old school after dark.
Solo hentai scenes are kind of cute but not terribly hot and I can’t help but wonder why the sweet little pink haired girl is crying while masturbating. Of course when Isaku finds her in the bathroom there’s real cause for tears. Turns out Isaku is bad but there are other wolves in them there woods than him alone, when the main character Kenta finds a video tape detailing what happened to his brand new girlfriend all is revealed. The sex scenes feature elements of bdsm as well as humiliation but was overall not terribly unusual.
It’s easy to see how the original game would have been a very spooky experience. The episode definitely had some scary horror movie classic elements to it (like being stupid and continually splitting up even when you already know there’s danger out there) but it wasn’t nearly as debauched as I’d been led to believe. It’s also just one part 1 of 3 and the story was obviously only just getting started. Of course I should admit that it’s the Shuzaku episodes that are mentioned most often as being the most debauched, I wanted to start at the beginning because of the plot.
I like plots and this one isn’t bad at all. Spooky and well crafted for its incredibly limited time frame, I’m definitely interested in seeing the rest and more than a little anxious about what the series will have in store for viewers further down the road. And you know what happens in a horror movie when you let your guard down thinking things aren’t as bad as they seem…
