Editor’s Spotlight: Tristan Taormino and House of Ass

March is Women’s History Month!

Tristan Taormino is one of our heroes here at HotMoviesForHer.com.

She’s an award-winning author, sex-educator and filmmaker whose Village Voice column “Pucker Up” has been one of the most popularly syndicated sex columns in the nation since it’s inception in 1999. A former editor of the widely respected lesbian magazine On Our Backs, Tristan has also written the bestselling books Down and Dirty Sex Secrets, True Lust: Adventures in Sex, Porn and Perversion and what is considered the Holy Bible of anal sex, The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women, which has just been reprinted in it’s second edition. She has been the recipient of the prestigious Lambda Literary Award twice and has collected two AVN awards for her work in adult film.

In addition to her extensive college tours and renowned how-to sex workshops, Tristan was the resident sexpert and recurring guest on the ninth season of Ricki Lake in 2003 and has been as a guest on Sunday Night on CNN, The Scarborough Report on MSNBC, The Howard Stern Show on E! Entertainment Television, and The Other Half on NBC. She has also has been profiled on The Sex Files on the Discovery Health Channel and has been featured in two episodes of HBO’s Real Sex. More on Tristan.

Whew! Seriously.

After a five year hiatus from adult film, Tristan amazingly found time to jump back in the saddle by directing House of Ass. A reality-TV inspired gonzo flick, House of Ass features seven strangers, picked to fuck in a house and have their lives taped…

Sound familiar?

Tristan’s vision was to “bring together a bunch of pornstars and the idea was to put them in an environment where they could relax, hang out. I could get to know them, they could get to know each other and we could film it all. I wanted to see what it might be like if they actually let their guard down…because the thing you always have to keep in mind is that they are performers. The standard is: they come to the set, they do their scene, they go home. So what would it be like if you hung out and then you had sex when you felt like it? Not on my schedule, but on their schedule. And what if they had sex with whomever they wanted to? I want people to put themselves together and then…. see what happens.”

What happens makes for a hot fucking movie.

The film is intentionally loose- no real (obvious) structure, no real planning. The viewer gets to see what it’s like behind the scenes when their favorite stars are just hanging out and talking about what they like and don’t like. In adult film, it’s easy to get lost in the bump n’ grind…the grunts, the flesh, the friction. Actors become less like human beings with real fears and flaws and more like nameless fuck machines whose existence is to get you, the viewer, off. However, in House of Ass, we become privy to the inner-workings of how porn stars operate on set. Are they ever hesitant? Do they have inhibitions? Keeping with the reality-TV inspired verite, sex scenes are book ended by Real World-esque confessionals where actors spill their guts both before and after their scenes. We come to care, not only about the size of their dicks or the firmness of their tits, but about their thoughts, feelings and reactions to what they’ve just displayed on screen. It’s an insider’s view that’s rarely explored- especially in a commercial film.

Because Tristan is such an expert on both sexuality and pornography, she knows exactly what she’s doing behind the camera. She’s able to capture the realistic heat without the unrealistic overindulgence. No prolonged super close-ups, no overdubbing edits- what you see is, no doubt, what happened. And because the atmosphere was intentionally set to “casual”, we see our stars fucking, not for performance sake, but for personal pleasure. They are having fun! This isn’t employment…this is carnal contentment.

So be sure to check out House of Ass, now playing here at HotMoviesForHer, and keep your eyes peeled for the 2007 AVN nominations…we’re betting it’ll be nominated like whoa! come next January.
