1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
In 1998, I started shooting erotic & fetish art photography and building a body of work. After I moved from Texas to LA in 2000, I continued shooting & started selling content, doing portfolio development for models, head shots, catalogs, private commissions, gallery shows, etc. In 2008, I moved to Oakland and worked as a sex educator for Babeland. Fueled by all the porn I was watching at work constantly, and just the natural evolution of my photography, I decided to start making films. So I created Anna Devia Productions and released Alpha Femmes and here I am.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
My work is not limited to adult. I do work in the healing arts as well, which is also about “the body” but on the completely non-sexual end of the spectrum.

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
I’ve learned the difference between the “scene” and the “industry.”

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
Construction workers next door to the house where we were filming were getting sneak peeks of the action through this big picture window during one of the scenes. One guy was standing behind a beam on the second floor peeping around it.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?
That we’re victims, rather than warriors

Massage appointment, therapy appointment, hair appointment

7. What would you rather have done today?
I’d rather have been on a yacht in some amazing tropical locale, sipping cocktails while lounging under an umbrella.

21. As a trans woman in the industry, how do you feel about the language used in porn movies, ie. She-male, Tranny?
I personally hate the words shim, she-male and lady boy… anything that has a male term in it I think is a little bit offensive. But in porn it kind of is what it is…  I’m sure genetic females don’t like being called ‘cum guzzling sluts,’ but it’s just the title. “Tranny” is fine to me because it’s just a shortened version of “transsexual.”

22. What do you think is the biggest misconception about trans folks and trans identity in the industry?
I hate that they say transsexuals are the ones with HIV and AIDS in the industry. In fact, the last two people who got booted for it never shot transsexual porn, just gay and straight. In America we have to get tested just like everyone else or we can’t shoot.

23. Do you feel as though your identity and personal sexuality is represented in the movies you perform in?
Kind of… My personality definitely is shown in movies but I’ve shot a few TS on TS scenes, which would most likely never happen with me in my real life. I’m a much bigger slut in porn.

24. Queer porn as a genre is rapidly expanding.  Do you consider the movies you perform in queer movies; do you consider yourself a queer performer?  Why/why not?
It depends. In today’s society “queer” means gay, and I am not in gay porn, I’m in transsexual porn… if you mean queer with the proper definition, then yes, the porn I shoot is different. I’m a fine ass bitch that just happens to have a dick. I consider myself a porn performer… they’re all “queer” to me.

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I was modeling for over a year and a scout from Brazzers contacted me through my Model Mayhem Page. Model Mayhem is a place were photographers, models and mainstream individuals connect. 1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I did my first scene right before I turned twenty years old. I believe it was in the Fall of 2005. I’d recently moved out of my mother’s house to go to school at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Like most young students, I quickly learned the difficulties of financially supporting one’s self while in school. So in the midst of a job search, I applied to Kink.com’s MenInPain.com website as a male model. They called me back the following day and I was shooting for them within a week.

However, I wouldn’t say that I was really in the industry until practically two years later. I moved to Los Angeles to pursue further education and a (now) ex-girlfriend, at which point porn became my full-time job.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I went to film school… so I would probably be doing a lot more low-level production work on mainstream sets, trying to work my way up the ladder in mainstream Hollywood (behind the camera).

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
I think I’ve created a certain dichotomy within myself in regards to my feelings about the industry. I try not to take the actual work too seriously – other than the fact that it’s a job so I need to show up on time and do my best while I’m there. But I’ve never really tried to promote myself in regards to getting more work. Being around long enough (and not fucking up too badly) has inevitably provided me enough work to support myself. I don’t think it’s something people need to stress out about in terms of doing something “right” or “wrong.”

On the other hand, I’ve come to find it very important to take seriously the ramifications of what we do, and how people perceive us. Because in the grand scheme of things, pornography is pushing the boundaries of “free speech,” impacting sexual behavior, and effecting the beliefs outsiders have on sexuality and sex workers. Without some sort of rational voice coming from inside the industry, outside opinions become largely shaped by hyperbole.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
I still think one of the funniest things that’s happened to me (or around me) took place during my first shoot. I was tied to a table, getting fucked in the ass by a female dom. I heard a loud thud and then laughter. The girl had slipped in a puddle of lube and landed on her ass. It was funny at the time and I still think it’s funny.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?
Every time I think we’ve moved past sex worker stereotypes, I hear them come up once again. Not everyone thinks this way, but the idea that female performers are drugged-out, sleazy, stupid, hookers still holds water in the minds of many.

Let me just say that there are all kinds of people who work in this industry. But the ones who last more than a month or two seem to have a solid head on their shoulders. We’re not all saints, but women in porn are no worse than any other average girl their age. I’ve worked with women who do this to support their children and I’ve worked with girls who do this while pursuing a Phd. There are women from all walks of life in this industry. So whatever conception you might have, it doesn’t fit everyone.

6. What did you do today?
I went grocery shopping, did some video editing, helped my girlfriend with some music production, and answered some emails. Tonight, I will be attending a book reading by fellow performer, Ashley Blue.

7. What would you rather have done today?
I think my day was fairly productive so I don’t wish it had gone all that differently.

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
I feel like I’ve had sex with most of the people I really wanted to have sex with. I’m sure new ones will come up. But I don’t stray far from the pornographic talent pool, to be honest. And I’m not sure that I want to at this point in time.

9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
There are a few. It changes, and I’m usually thinking about people I’ve worked with recently. But off the top of my head: Lily LaBeau, Andy San Dimas, Dylan Ryan, Asphyxia Noir, Gia Dimarco, and ummm… I’m sure there’s more. But that’s a pretty good list to start with.

10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
Am I about to die or something? Or I just have twenty bucks?

If I’m to be explicitly realistic, I’d probably buy something to eat. I’m constantly hungry and food seems to be where most of my money goes.

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
In a perfect world, I’d enact a real, universalized, free health care system. I think that’s something this country really needs. But I know that’s not just up to the president.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
This is the first thing that comes to mind. I think it was the last time I actually got drunk. I was maybe 16 or 17. Don’t remember doing this, but I guess I shit behind my friend’s drum kit and then wandered into his house without pants on, and proceeded to vomit all over the bath tub. The only reason I know it’s true is that I had to clean it when I woke up.

I’ve since quit drinking.

13. Which is your favorite project that you’ve worked on?
If we’re talking porn movies…

I like the outcome of a lot of the Eon McKai movies from the now-defunct Vivid Alt.

But from a level of pure enjoyment, I’m going with any number of Tristan Taormino films I’ve been involved with.

14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?
I don’t know. Flying? That seems fun and sort of useful with all the Los Angeles traffic.

15. Meat or veggie?
Meat – as long as it’s ethically farmed.

It’s very hard for me to pick an “all-time” favorite. But these are some films I enjoy very much: Taxidermia, Happiness, Enter the Void, and Head-On.

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
In December of 2009, I had slipped off my porch and broke my elbow and torn my meniscus in my right knee. I was laid up in my bed for weeks and while there I was surfing the internet. I came across an article about Madison Young and Syd Blakovich. I then started looking up queer porn and I got hooked. I applied with No Fauxxx and Crash Pad Series and the rest is history.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I would be working in the healthcare profession. I have a need to care and heal others…

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
I would have to say to stay true to yourself. Never allow anyone to tempt you with greatness for being something someone else wants you to be. You can achieve greatness by just being you.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
While filming in Tucson with Maria Beatty for Post Apocalyptic Cowgirls 2, we were filming the second to the last scene and we were all tired and dirty. We were in the middle is a gangbang scene and we needed more lube for the titty fuck. Instead of squirting lube on my breasts, it went on my lips and in my mouth. LOL!

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?
That we are all taken advantage of and not allowed to think for ourselves. I think most have the idea that we are all ‘forced’ into the industry. That we are all made to performs sex acts that we don’t agree with. My experience with the industry is that I have always had the freedom to say no if it doesn’t seem right or something I am not into.

6. What did you do today?
I woke up and had a parent/teacher conference, lol (yes, I am a parent too!), then had a phone meeting with my distributor. Now, I am editing film while watching ‘Dodgeball’

7. What would you rather have done today?
I love my life. So I wouldn’t change a thing…

Mmm, well I admire many people in the industry. I would love to do a film with Nica Noelle. She has such great films and in such great taste. I would also love to work with Wolf Hudson because he is such a down to earth guy with an amazing sense of humor. And Sinnamon Love, she is so amazing at what she does. She’s a hard working woman. 9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
Of course, Belladonna. She is so real and raw. She follows her passion and makes things happen.

I guess technically I started when I was 18 modeling for Suicide Girls, then progressing to Burning Angel and more hardcore things. Eventually I started shooting for more companies and here I am. Now I have my own site, www.meowmistidawn.com

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I was in college until last December, the traveling back and forth became too difficult so I moved from the Midwest. I intend on returning and now I think I’d like to get in the gaming industry in some form. Perhaps in HR.

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
To take care of yourself and remember it’s just a job and always be planning for the future.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
Ha! It’s kind of hard to pin down one thing since I’m always clumsy. I say anytime on set with me in a funny time.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?
That we are easy to sleep with. Let me tell you, my pants are not easy to get into!

Answered these questions, played PS3 (Fall Out New Vegas!) and laundry! Riveting Monday!

7. What would you rather have done today?
Ordered a magic fairy that would have done my laundry for me. I hate putting laundry away ugh! Takes away from my gaming time!

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
Adult movie… Belladonna and I got to! Non adult, Paul Newman!

Tricky question… right now while looking at my pile of laundry wishing it would hang itself. I would want to be like Wolverine, the ability to regenerate and kick ass.

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I’ve been in the industry for some time now. Not many people know it, but I’ve have a adult toy site which I shut down some time ago. So, I’ve basically been hanging around looking at ways to stay in the industry. Last year I read about Reel Queer (Good Vibrations) [Productions] Film Company and finally got a meeting with Coyote Days. And, the rest is her-story. My first film, Tight Places: A Drop of Color, debuted on May 24th, 2010! With so much excitement, I’m here to stay!

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
I’d most likely be freelancing in the video community and/or working in technology as a Data Security or Network Engineer. Yes, I heart computers. I’ve worked with them all my life.

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from industry?
Best Advice: It wouldn’t be porn if I didn’t get fucked as well. Key Learning: Shit never goes as planned, so quit planning and make shit happen.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
When I’m on set, I don’t allow my mind to wander to funny places. I step into a zone and stay there until my soul says its’ done. I would say that’s the athlete in me. Playing Basketball all my life and even in college has helped to keep the competitor in me alive.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about women in the industry?
That they are brainless sluts that have horrible upbringings, which is totally the opposite. All of the female or trans individuals I’ve met are doctors posing as rock stars. For individuals to give their bodies and faces to the plight of porn is no easy undertaking. However, the great reward is that people within your community do support you. I’ve never heard anything negative about directors or performers, which speaks to how most in porn want to see it succeed.

6. What did you do today?
Watching episodes of the Australian Hit series: Satisfaction which is about escorts whom have family structures, but are sex workers… with my Lover.

7. What would you rather have done today?
I would have rather been on the British island of Tortola shooting a film. It’s one of the few Caribbean islands I’ve been to that has an authentic feeling of peace and beauty. After shooting, well, I’d pray for a full moon so that the roads would be closed for the island’s biggest party over at the Bomba Shack.

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
James Dean because he was such incredible and believable actor. Although you won’t see me staring in any porn films, I am looking to get into commercial television work as well as mainstream acting.

9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
Kitten… I’ve seen a few scenes [of her] with women and it is so delectable.

10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
$10 on Gas; and the other $10 on a Bake Sale Betty Sandwich (Fried Chicken & Coleslaw) shared with my Lover.

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
Unemployment. There are so many people out of work that it’s unfathomable to see the trickle down effects of having little to no money. 99 weeks is not enough time for individuals to get back on their feet, 1 million people, which is the maximum time allowable that individuals can receive unemployment benefits.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
Bought a computer in the parking lot of Home Depot that turned out to be a brick! I’ve only told 3 people besides HM4H: My Mother, Sister, and Lover. My Mother is a jokester so she still cracks up at that!

13. Which is your favorite project that you’ve worked on?
My favorite project is me! I’ve grown leaps and bounds to become a person whom can enjoy the life I’ve been given. My spirit feels at ease, my mind is free and my heart is alert — I’ll never be the same.

14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?
Since I love to travel, I would have to say flying. Flying would get me to places that cars can’t drive or have no runways for airplanes. I’d like to see 1 place in this world that man has never set foot.

15. Meat or veggie?
My family is from Arkansas and Lousiana… there is nothing like Fried Chicken, Collard Greens with Neck Bones, and Chitterlings on the side. I’m totally a meat eater!

16. What is your favorite book?
Every time I read a book I say it’s my favorite. But this time I really mean it! My favorite is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. My favorite interpretation in the book is to know when you go away and follow your dreams, that you should go and anyone whom stops you from going is not the love for you.

17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Slouching is a HUGE pet peeve. A woman’s back is as beautiful as her face. I can see the confidence in a woman that sits straight-up. Not only does it speak volumes of her strength but it shows off your neck pretty well, I must say.

18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
Always envision you making love to yourself before you make love to anyone else. Visualization is a very powerful technique.

19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Trans Entities: The Nasty Love of Papi and Wil. This couple gives out some incredible energy that lets you know they are REAL! Everything from the knife play to the negotiation with their third partner is genuine. Hands down… it’s a beautiful movie!

1. How (and when) did you get started in the industry?
I was working a barely paying job as a tutor and being supported by my partner. It was spring of 2007, I needed extra money to get across the country for Camp Trans and a lover hooked me up with a “shemale” porn website. After two shoots, it was clear that it wasn’t a good match. When those shoots confirmed that I couldn’t ejaculate (I did tell them up front) they didn’t want me back, and I was never very stoked on the fact that they used the word “shemale” or having to play to a straight audience.

I had always had a strong appreciation for feminist/queer porn, and had made a few connections into that sub-industry, so I sought out advice and support and began working on my own film, picking up a few feminist/queer gigs along the way.

2. If you weren’t in the adult industry, what would you be doing?
My major talent and inspiration has always been in writing. I haven’t stopped, but working on a porn film and distribution has made it really hard to find time to write. I have a half finished erotic fiction zine series that I would definitely be trying to finish. And despite the time drain, I’ve still got into three anthologies last year: “Best Lesbian Erotica 2010,” “Who’s Your Daddy: And Other Writings on Queer Parenting,” and “And Baby Makes More: Queer Parents, Known Donors, and Our Unexpected Families.”

3. What’s the best thing you’ve learned or best advice you’ve received from the industry?
I learned to identify what I want in my life and go for it. Seriously, doing this kind of work has been a major dream of mine. It’s been a lot of work over the past few years and when all the original footage was lost and the backup footage had data errors in it I very well could have given up. I scaled back my goals when necessary, but I was always dedicated to creating something. Now that Doing it Ourselves is finished and I’ve even won an award for my work on it, it feels odd to realize that I’ve accomplished one of my life’s dreams. Now I guess it’s time to envision something new to make come true – like making back the money I spent on producing the film.

4. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened while filming?
It wasn’t so funny at the time, but we laughed about it afterward. Over my first two shoots for Doing it Ourselves there were three injuries, two of them mine. Gina slipped and banged her knee pretty bad, I majorly aggravated an ongoing receptive stress injury in my foot and wasn’t able to walk for a couple days, and when we shot in the woods I fell off a log skinning my knees and breaking half a dozen fingernails. If you watch the credits you’ll notice that my partner Ronan was the on-site medic. For a while I worried there might have been a curse or something, but now I figure it was just an unfortunate series of coincidences and I’m glad to say we’ve been injury free since July 2008.

5. What do you think is the biggest misconception about trans folks and trans identity in the industry?
The folks I worked with in the industry actually understood a lot more about trans folks than most people I meet. However, they made it their business to perpetuate certain myths. Rather than allow trans women to be sexual on their own terms, they put in place certain requirements around glorifying pre-op genitals, getting and staying hard, ejaculating, and so on. For example, in my second mainstream shoot I actually had a pretty strong orgasm – and it was difficult for me to be orgasmic at the time so it meant a lot – but they interrupted me mid-orgasm and set the camera down so that they could set up a fake ejaculation shot by squirting my stomach with lube. I just rolled my eyes that they’d rather have a 3 second faked shot of my body doing something it doesn’t do rather than a full 30+ seconds of ecstatic writhing in genuine orgasmic pleasure.

Of course there are some trans women who fit with the industry’s expectations, but there are at least as many who are triggered by them. Being on a decent hormone regimen will make some of it difficult or impossible, and getting genital surgery will often mean the end of your career – forcing you to choose between your transition and your job. The industry knows all this and so does a good portion of their audience. But they still build fantasies around these myths. And so long as employment discrimination is rampant in trans populations, there will be a constant stream of trans women ready to play out those fantasies even when doing so is uncomfortable for them. There are comparable issues that cis (non-trans) women face in the industry, but I get the sense that the gap between mainstream and feminist/queer porn is a lot larger for trans women.

6. What did you do today?
I talked with my editor, Missa, about the planning of my next film, worked on the script for it, rehearsed a performance piece about sex work I’m doing this weekend at a benefit show for the Trans and Women’s Action Camp, researched a new camera I want to buy, and beat Assassin’s Creed 2.

7. What would you rather have done today?
Pretty much just that. It might be nice to be slightly less busy sometime soon, I’ve got some other responsibilities that are sliding a bit. Also, it’d be nice to see more people rather than spend so much time in my home office.

8. If you could do a movie with anyone (living or brought back from the dead) who would it be?
I can think of quite a few people. On the impossible level, it would be lovely to work with Silvia Rivera or Jesus – I could change the world if he did a film with me. On the possible level, April Flores or Jiz Lee – I’ve talked with them both, like them a lot, and get the sense they’d be great to work with. On the improbably level, I’d have to say Lana Wachowski (You wouldn’t have to be in front of the camera, Lana, you could write me a script, direct me, or whatever you want).

9. Who is your favorite adult performer?
There’s so many who have been influences on me. Jiz Lee is definitely one of my favorites. I love their passion, compassion, and heart. It’s awesome to see a genderqueer performer like them doing so much great work and getting well deserved recognition.

10. You’ve got 20 bucks left to your name; what would you do with it?
Buy beautiful and thoughtful gifts for my two partners who would presumably be supporting me until I get back on my feet.

11. If you were president, what’s the first thing you’d change?
Instruct law enforcement not to enforce any anti-sex laws while I work to repeal them, institute major civilian oversight of law enforcement with representation from the most disadvantaged populations, and socialize all public services with funding from majorly slashing the military budget focusing on conventional weaponry.

12. What’s the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
When I was a teenager I got caught playing strip poker in my friend’s church. It doesn’t seem like much, but at the time I was mortified.

13. Which is your favorite project you’ve worked on?
Well, that would be Doing it Ourselves, of course. It’s been hard work but a lot of fun. The best part, though, is how much everyone who worked on it cared about the project. Having so many folks with such passion for the concept, message, and structure made it a lot easier to dedicate myself so wholly to it.

14. If you could have 1 superpower what would it be?
Teleportation – I’ve got too many people geographically dispersed that I want to see/spend time with/work with. A close runner up would be shapeshifting.

15. Meat or veggie?
Major preference for vegetarian food, but I’m not actually vegetarian. I wanted to be when I was younger but I never turned down food put in front of me, and now I approach the meat industry with a harm-reduction model rather than one of abstinence.

16. What is your favorite book?
Whipping Girl, by Julia Serano. It changed the landscape of how trans feminism is seen and discussed. It’s not perfect and there are some very legitimate criticisms and complaints, but that book sparked thousands of conversations that have become an awakening of trans women’s empowerment.

17. What is your biggest pet peeve?
Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being attracted to trans people – I heartedly encourage it. But some people really get caught up in the fantasy of a trans person and somehow imagine that every trans person they meet will fit that stereotypical fantasy image. Nothing bugs me more than when someone comes up to me on the street and starts hitting on my like I’m a heteronormative bimbo so desperate for validation that I’d fuck anyone who tells me I’m beautiful no matter how many boundaries they cross in the process.

18. What is your best piece of sex advice for women?
I find confidence is about the sexiest quality a person can have. Know that you can be sexy regardless of your body type or other such factors. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you need, and don’t be afraid to look silly. It may seem simple or common sense, but for many those can be hard lessons to learn.

19. What is your favorite adult movie?
Champion – I love how you can see character development in the way the main character has sex. It makes the sex part of the plot rather than something inserted next to it. I don’t know if it was the intention or not, but as someone who has struggled with disassociation during sex and still does sometimes I can see it as a strong example of that experience.

20. Tell me one thing you’ve never told anyone else.
All the interesting true things about myself I’ve probably told someone at some point, so to answer this question I’ll have to resort to something mundane. Um, I ate fresh potatoes and eggs for breakfast yesterday.
