She’s Havin’ a Baby: Navigating Sex and Pregnancy

My wife just found out that she is pregnant, about 8 weeks in. Our doctor said as long as her pregnancy is low risk, we can have sex throughout the entire nine months. While I trust our doctor, I am nervous to accidentally hurt my wife or the baby. Are there special ways to have sex during pregnancy?-Pregnant Pause

Congratulations! Babies are awesome! And your doctor is absolutely right – if they say it is a low risk pregnancy and that all lights are green for having sex, then go for it! Your hesitation is perfectly normal though. I can be hard for someone to know what is healthy and safe for their pregnant partner’s changing body. But not to worry, there are plenty of tricks and tips to keep things hot, heavy and healthy throughout the whole nine months.

Before we get into specific positions and techniques, let’s talk about hormones. As you probably already know, it’s hormones surging through your partner’s body that is making all these changes happen in the first place. And if you were ever a teenager, ever known a teenager or ever even heard of the phenomenon of adolescence, you know that surging hormones means mood fluctuations and high emotions. Sometimes this makes women want sex even more than before the pregnancy, sometimes it makes women not want it at all, and sometimes it fluctuates throughout the nine months - she’s totally anti sex the first couple of months and becomes a major horn-dog the last few. The big thing to remember is that her body is the one going through all sort of crazy changes and just because she doesn’t want to have sex now, or wants it all the time, things can change with the drop of a hat.

Now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and talk about positions. In the beginning of the pregnancy, you can go about having sex in whatever positions you enjoyed previously, but as your partner’s abdomen grows larger, some positions, such as missionary, can become uncomfortable for her. Any pressure on her belly can push the baby into her vital organs generally make it harder to breathe and circulate blood. Really sexy, I know.

Some great positions to try out during these months of extended belly (and even after) are spooning, doggy style (or from behind) and woman on top, just to name a few. Woman on top is a great way to still get the face to face intimacy of missionary without the discomfort. Spooning – both partners lying on their sides facing the same direction, pregnant woman in front is penetrated from behind - is also great because your partner can just lay on her side and not put any strain on her body. And you get to hold each other, which can be very sensual as well.

The big thing is to remember to get creative! Whatever positions feel good for both of you are the ones to go with. Take this time to find ones that you might even like after the baby is born!

Along with intercourse, here are a few other great ideas for pampering your pregnant partner:

- Footrubs, footrubs footrubs! Did I mention footrubs? I hope so, because pregnant women’s feet can swell and become really uncomfortable. Giving her pigs a little love can also sometimes help get a totally cranky gal into a hot and horny place faster than flowers or candy. But, be sure to avoid any ankle rubbing, which can cause a woman to go into pre-term labor!

- Don’t forget that a woman’s breasts usually get bigger while she’s prego. This can be a total bonus for you, as long as you clear nipple play with her before you dive right in. Some women experience intensely sensitive nipples at times during their pregnancies, but if she’s down, go for it!

- Help her mundane tasks become super sexy by making them a couples activity. Instead of her just rubbing the Vitamin E lotion (to prevent stretch marks) on after a shower, grab the bottle and turn that boring experience into super sexy massage time. And now that she can no longer see to shave, how about helping her stay feeling sexy and maintained with an erotic shaving session? Complete with happy ending oral sex, of course!

- Feel free to continue using sex toys throughout the pregnancy, but just make 100% sure that they are clean. This goes for fingers and genitals too. While infections are never a good thing, this time is especially bad for one to come along.

Like I said above, having a baby can be a really exciting time, both in general and for your sex life. Just because sex can change during pregnancy doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing! Take advantage of the next nine months and fuck each other’s brains out… it may not be so easy once your infant is here!

And don’t forget, sexin’ is what got you here in the first place! Continue to enjoy it!
